4 Reasons Kids Should Wear Sunglasses + 4 Cute Pairs of Kids Sunglasses!

On a perfect summer day you and your children are walking into Disney World. You’ve been planning this adventure for months. On your way into the park, you do a last minute check of your bag. Do you have everything? Food, extra clothes, sunblock, and a pair of Ray-Ban Junior glasses?

Why would your child need a pair of sunglasses? For the same reason you need them, for protection from Ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Many people are aware that UV rays can cause sunburns, skin damage, and even cancer.  Less of us are aware that too much sun can cause sunburns on the cornea.  This is a painful reminder to kids and adults to wear sunglasses, but it heals eventually. What doesn’t heal over time are the long-term effects of too much UV. UV is a contributing factor to eye diseases like cataracts. When parents protect their child’s eyes with high-quality sunglasses, they reduce the risk that their child will develop eye problems later in life.

Now all of this may be a lot to think about on a summer day at Disney World.  But during the spring and summer months it is especially important to protect your baby or older child from too much sun. Unfortunately, children are at more risk for eye damage than adults. They are still growing and have less natural eye protection. They are also outside more than adults and have greater sun exposure than Mom and Dad.

How Not Wearing Sunglasses Can Be Harmful for your Child:

  1. Squinting requires muscle activity and can be a contributor to a child’s headache and twitching eyes because (contraction of the muscles).
Adults should keep in mind that wearing sunglasses will cut down on crows’ feet around their eyes.
  2. UV exposure is harmful to the eyes as well as the skin – Source: Webmd.com
  3. After a long day in the sun, your child’s eyes may be bloodshot, swollen, and light-sensitive. – Source: Webmd.com
  4. Many ophthalmologists educate parents about not only the long-term health risks from UV exposure, such as cataracts, but short-term benefits of wearing sunglasses such as being able to see better in very sunny situations such as on the beach or in an area with a lot of concrete sidewalks such as Disney World, a popular summer vacation destination.

Fortunately, several companies make kids’ sunglasses that are stylish, cool and kid-proof. Ray-Ban JuniorRealKidsShades.com, and Julbo Kids Sunglasses, all offer excellent eyewear options for children.

Here are a few kids sunglasses worth taking a look at

Kids Sunglasses

1 – Ray-Ban 65mm Shield Sunglasses (Big Boys) Grey/ Green One Size at Macy’s

2 – Julbo Looping III Sunglasses – Girls’ at REI

3 – Chili’s Jellie Sunglasses at REI

4 – Baby & Kids Sun Smarties Sunglasses with Strap at One Step Ahead

When shopping for your children, look for glasses that are designed for kids with a pair of straps. Adult glasses may not offer the same level of sun protection.  Ray-Ban Junior offers the same level of quality they have on their adult products, but sized for kids.  Julbo Kids Sunglasses offer fun, functional products that are shock-resistant with customized kids frames.  At RealKidsShades.com, you can find products that are comfortable, durable and cool. All these companies offer straps for their glasses.

It can be tempting to buy a pair of toy shades for your little one. Toys only give your baby the illusion of protection during hot summer months. Vendors like RealKidsshades.com offer quality products that have 99-100% UV protection and sturdy construction.

Now is the time to teach your children to take care of their eyes by using quality sunglasses. Just like eating right, if you set the example now, you’ll be giving them a great foundation in life.

My Dream Vacation and Must-Have Travel Gadgets | #HTCOne #TroopOneX

If I am without my smartphone for just an hour I get a little anxious.  Don’t you?  I suppose that’s considered an addiction but I could be addicted to far worse things than my favorite gadgets.   That being said, I make sure that I have all of my gadget gear including my phone on my “tech packing list” well before packing for a trip.

blogger travel gadgetsWhat’s on my tech packing list?

1. HTC OneX+
2. External battery charger
3. A/C Charger
4. Regular length USB Cable
5. 10 foot USB Cable (like this one, for times when an outlet is not close)
6. Earphones
7. iPad – for watching movies on flight
8. MacBook
9. Charging Station

Before a trip, especially a blogger trip, I make sure that I move my most frequently used travel related apps to my HTC One X+ homescreen.  Some of my most used apps during travel are Delta for checking flight status, Foursquare for checking in, Pandora for music, Yelp for local restaurant reviews, Hootsuite for Twitter & Facebook updates, Instagram for fun photos, Google Maps for directions, Camera for taking photos, Skype for video chatting with family, and WordPress for blogging.

I mostly use my phone as my camera when I’m on trips.  I take a camera but chances are I’m going to snap the best and most candid photos with my smartphone, not my camera, because my phone is easier to get to.  And, it’s easy to share photos I’ve taken with my HTC One X+ with friends and family, and my social networks, in a snap!

On to my dream vacation

I stayed at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa in San Diego California a couple of years ago for a media trip with Honda and have wanted to go back, with my husband, since.  While I have a few favorite places right here in Georgia that we travel to often for vacation, I would love for my husband and I to go on a vacation.. sans kids, sometime.  In the 14 years that we’ve been married, we have been on one (mini) vacation without the kids and that was a media trip for a cruise line about 5 years ago.  Hardly a vacation.

If I plan an amazing vacation my husband can’t say no, right?  Did you know that you can plan a vacation right from your smartphone?  There are tons of Android apps that will help you plan your dream vacation from flights, to hotels, to restaurants, and playgrounds!

The 2 top apps I used to plan my dream vacation

First, I checked the Delta app on my phone to see how much a flight to San Diego would cost.

Then I searched for Estancia La Jolla using Expedia, Yelp, Kayak, and YP apps where I read reviews and got details about the hotel & spa and even checked room availability.  I was very happy to find that Estancia La Jolla gets rave reviews!

It looks amazing, doesn’t it?

I don’t think my husband will argue about my dream vacation destination.  I would love for the 4 of us to travel overseas to Italy, France, and Ireland but I can’t imagine finding the time anytime soon. I’ll keep you updated if that changes.

You can plan your dream vacation from just about any smartphone but I used my HTC OneX+ to plan mine.  Learn more about the HTC OneX+ and follow @HTC on Twitter.

Disney Vacation Tips and the New Fantasyland Expansion

I grew up in Orlando, Florida and I’m pretty sure that we visited Disney World on a regular basis.  I still remember specific moments from our trips to Disney World and Epcot when I was just in awe.  My favorite ride has always been It’s a Small World and I loved walking through the countries at Epcot.

Now that I am a parent, I know that there are few moments in childhood that will cause the faces of my son and daughter’s faces to light up with as much excitement as the first time they went to Disney World. What better vacation could a kid ever ask for?   Your kids might be over the moon about your upcoming or future Disney World vacation, but when it comes down to planning your trip to Florida, there’s a lot to think about. Where do you stay? Where do you eat? How do you manage to pack in as many attractions, and as much family fun as possible? It’s important for parents to know where to begin.

Snow White at Disney WorldWhen most families think of Disney World, what they really envision is the Magic Kingdom Park, which is actually one of four theme parks that Disney has to offer. But of course, the Magic Kingdom Park is the one that kids don’t want to miss, because it has all the classic Disney attractions. Kids will love Cinderella Castle, It’s a Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain, and all the favorite rides they would expect from Disney parks.
One of the most exciting things to see is the new Fantasyland expansion, which offers two new themed areas called the Enchanted Forest and the Storybook Circus. The Enchanted Forest features attractions and dining options inspired by The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, where kids can meet their favorite characters and adults can feast on gourmet meals. Storybook Circus is inspired by Dumbo and features colorful circus tents and fun attractions adjacent to the Fantasyland Railroad Station. And they’re not done yet! By 2014, Fantasyland promises to be double its size, making it the largest expansion in the park’s history.

What other attractions and dining options are at the other Disney theme parks for your family to enjoy?
The most famous is Epcot, where you and your kids can experience attractions and entertainment highlighting different countries around the world, with a bit of Disney magic thrown in. The whole family will also love Disney’s Animal Kingdom. You can get up close and personal with many exotic animals, go on your own African safari, and see the most complete T-Rex skeleton in the world.

In order to get the most out of your visit, you might want to consider staying at a Disney resort hotel. The 27 different Disney resort hotels and campgrounds offer a variety of vacation packages to suit your family’s needs, and some even include meals and snacks! Disney resort guests receive complimentary transportation to and from the airport, plus they get to take advantage of extended theme park hours. Some hotels even offer Disney character dining, where your kids can visit with Disney princesses or other favorite faces while they eat.

Don’t forget to download the Disney Parks Mobile Magic App before your Walt Disney World vacation! Take it along with you so you have access to GPS, a dining guide, and even wait times for your favorite attractions. With a little planning, you’ll still find out here’s no better way to make the kids smile than Disney.
