Madelyn Loves Reading Thanks to iPad App Bookboard

Bookboard iPad reading appI cancelled cable about a year ago because I was so frustrated with the kids always expecting to be able to watch tv, then they’d turn into zombies when they were allowed to watch something, then they turned into evil little monsters when I told them to do something while they were watching tv.   Since I cancelled cable, I’ve had to come up with ways, creative ways, to occupy my 7-year-old.  My 14-year-old occupies himself by doing stuff outside, but my daughter has a difficult time finding things to do even though she has a gazzilion toys.  I was told about an iPad app called Bookboard recently that encourages children to read.  I’ve tried dozens of reading apps with my daughter but she never stuck with any of them.  I purposely didn’t right this post until she had been using the app for a month to be sure that it really was different and she still enjoyed it after that long.

For children who are inundated with fast-paced video games and television shows, reading has become a chore rather than a delight. The myriad benefits of reading–increased vocabulary, more developed analytical and critical reasoning, improved memory and focus–are useless if a child never picks up a book. Fortunately, not all electronic devices are detrimental to the habit of reading: one iOS app, Bookboard, has reimagined the concept to enchant and encourage young readers to explore the infinite world of reading.

Bookboard is especially appealing to children who have not yet fostered a love for reading. The gaming features (collecting new ebooks and unlocking items) provide an incentive for kids who are struggling with reading to continue to practice. And, of course, children who are already avid readers will enjoy using their skills to earn new titles to explore.

Bookboard is designed for readers up to age 12, and includes over 400 ebooks that are unlocked gradually the more a child reads.   My daughter responds well to incentives and the Bookboard app offers just that.

You can download a 30-day free trial of Bookboard to explore its features and test out its unique motivational approach to reading. If you like the app, the pricing options for a full subscription are pleasingly affordable. A monthly subscription runs just $8.99 per month. A six-month subscription costs only $29.94, which works out to less than $5 a month. Considering many hardcover books run $30 or over, accessing Bookboard’s extensive library for the same price is a great deal.

Gift subscriptions to Bookboard can also be purchased for friends or family whose children will appreciate the gift of unlimited reading. A full year’s subscription only costs $54.99.

Bookboard subscribers enjoy other features of the app, including offline reading capabilities. Bookboard allows you to download up to twenty books at a time for your child to read at their leisure, no matter how far they are from a WiFi hotspot. Subscribers also have access to audio books which allow children to tap words or blocks of text to hear them read aloud.

If you are looking for a new way to encourage your child to read, give Bookboard a try. Its goal-based approach might just transform your reluctant reader into a bona fide bookworm.

Life Happens. Protect your Smartphone and Tablet with the OtterBox Defender Series!

It’s getting harder and harder to go anywhere without a smart phone or tablet these days.  On our recent trip to Florida, I brought my iPhone, iPad, and Kindle, and my kids each brought their iPhones.  We were toting a total of 5 devices and the worry of them dropping their device of spilling milk or water on it was almost constant.

Owners of smartphones will quickly learn two facts. First, smartphones are pretty fragile, and second, they are expensive to replace. This is even more true if you have young kids in the house.  Spilled juice or a drop onto concrete can easily cost you hundreds of dollars, making a protective case a must. For the iPhone, they don’t get much better than the OtterBox Defender.

OtterBox Defender Series Review

OtterBox Defender Series

The Defender Series cases are high quality cases with an outer layer of silicone and an inner layer of hard plastic to protect your phone from drops onto any surface. Even better, Defenders have a plastic screen protector while many other iPhone cases leave your screen open to the elements. This protects your screen from dirt, abrasion, and most importantly, sticky fingers. Your ports aren’t forgotten either, as these cases have silicone plugs that keep out dirt and debris. Each case also comes with a belt clip that doubles as a stand for video watching, but it can be removed for a sleeker look.  The Defender Series is available in several colors and shoppers can even build their own Defender Series OtterBox case.  My favorite is the Paisley & Floral Defender Series case from the Studio Collection.

Other OtterBox Cases

There are several other lines of cases available for your phone or iPad for those who don’t need quite so much protection. The Commuter Series has two layer construction like the Defender, but the silicone is on the inside instead of the outside. The Reflex sacrifices the silicone and had internal air pockets to dampen shock instead. On the other hand, the Impact Series is a robust silicone case lacking any hard plastic layer. Finally, the Prefix combines both layers into one, giving you the best of both worlds. Every case is available for a range of devices in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

I rely on my OtterBox.  So far I have dropped my phone out a two story window.  It was an accident, really!  One of my first iPhone’s slipped from a stack of books I was carrying and shattered.  My husband drove off with his iPhone on the hood of his car.   My son washed his iPhone. It’s not like all of these mishaps happened within a short period of time.  We aren’t clumsy.  It’s just life.  Things happen!

If you need a robust, functional case then OtterBox is where you should look. Their variety of HTC cases, iPhone cases, and tablet cases are excellently constructed and built to last. In fact, you’ll replace your phone with a new model before you replace your case. One thing to be aware of is that these cases can be a bit more expensive than other brands, but you really do get what you pay for. The protection they offer is top notch and few other cases can compete with it. Don’t spend ages sifting through different brands and models of smartphone or iPad cases; the Defender has you covered.

Now that I’m using an HTC OneX+, I hope to get an OtterBox case for it soon too!

I received an OtterBox Defender Series for review purposes.  As always, all opinions in this post are 100% my own. I only write about products that I would buy for my family.

iPad App Review: Kumon Uppercase ABC’s – Learn to Trace Letters

App Review: Kumon Uppercase ABC's - Learn to Trace Letters
Learn to Trace Letters

The Kumon Uppercase ABC iPad app teaches sound and letter recognition of capital letters to preschoolers. Best enjoyed by children ages three to four, the Kumon Uppercase ABC’s iPad allows children to trace uppercase letters, hear the sounds the letters make, and associate them with a picture that begins with the sound to help integrate the learning of letter recognition with beginning reading skills.  These are skills children need to get ahead when entering Kindergarten.

The Kumon Uppercase ABC’s App uses interactive repetition to teach children how to write and recognize capital letters and offers them examples of the sounds.  Parents can choose to present letters at random, in alphabetical order, or in the Kumon order, where more difficult tasks are based on simpler ones.
Your child will first be shown the direction of each movement that makes up a letter.   Your child traces the letter with just the movement direction and no order directions, and last, your child draws the letter without direction or order instruction. This is a nice progression to make sure your child knows how to write each capital letter.  My five year old doesn’t have the finest of fine motor skills and got a little frustrated a few times because she has to stay within the outline for it to be correct.   Overall though, she loves the app and even though she knows all of the letters she can still benefit from the writing and fine motor skill practice the app offers.
Requirements: Compatible with the iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 or later.

iMommy iPad and iPhone App Review

Does your child love playing with baby dolls or pets? Then he/she will love the iMommy app.  My daughter has been playing with iMommy today and she loves it.  When we launched the app for the first time, my daughter got to choose and customize a baby.  She customized her baby by changing her baby’s eye, hair, and clothing color.  She even got to choose a cute little design for her baby’s outfit!  After her baby was customized she was presented with a scrolling view of the different rooms/areas in which she could play with her baby.

iMommy bath time screen

There are six areas where her baby can play, sleep, and eat.  The different rooms/areas rotated across the screen allowing her to tap on the one that she wants to play.

My daughter’s favorite room is the playroom.  There are books and toys for her baby to play with.  She simply drags a toy or book into her baby’s hand or puts it by the baby and watches as her baby reacts with movement and sounds.  She can even tap on the radio in the playroom to play music for her baby.  The baby sounds are adorable.

Bath time is especially fun.  Madelyn enjoys turning the water on and off, giving her baby toys to play with in the bath tub, and cleaning her with soap and shampoo.

When she decides it’s bedtime for her baby, she goes to the nursery screen where her baby is in a crib.  She can tap on a teddy bear to have her baby snuggle with the teddy and click on a crib icon to rock the baby’s crib.  The lights turn on and off with the tap of a light switch.

Here is a brief video of my daughter playing with iMommy for the first time:

About iMommy
Kathy Shimmield, the genius creator of iMommy developed this game with her children in mind.  Her two youngest were especially interested in playing ‘Mom’ and it occurred to her that such a universal game as ‘pretend’ parental play, would translate into a great app.  Kathy searched the app store and was genuinely surprised to find no apps that addressed this type of imaginative play for younger children.  It took many months of research, learning as she went and focus but eventually ‘iMommy’ was born!
This game is ideal for kids ages 2-10 but is suitable for any age.  The focus of the game is to design and interact with your baby, the player can choose 4 different ethnicities of baby then they can change their babies hair, eye or outfit color. It’s up to them to take care of their baby and learn what makes the baby happy and what upsets the baby.  They have to feed, play, bathe and even change babies diaper!

iTunes rated TOP 100 in family category and I’m sure it will hit to 10 soon!

iMommy is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Download iMommy today and let the fun begin!
