My kids are excited about Halloween. Lucky for them, they have no idea what’s involved in preparing for Halloween besides dressing up and collecting candy.
What’s involved in Halloween, you ask?
Here’s a list:
Halloween costumes for each child
Candy for Trick-or-Treators
Halloween decorations
Oh, wait.. here’s a great infographic that breaks it down for you. Take a look and let us know if you spend more or less on Halloween.
Want to know a secret? If you look carefully and do the math, you’ll learn that if your household is sending out at least one trick-or-treater, by the end of the night you may have earned back your initial candy investment and then some.
I wonder if we should factor in dentist appointments and stomach meds for those who’ve eaten too much candy corn?
Five years ago my daughter didn’t have much hair. She was a baby with strawberry blonde ‘fuzz’ on her head and a huge smile. Those two things didn’t show that she was a girl however. When we would take Madelyn out to the store and if she wasn’t in pink or purple clothes, she would be mistaken for a boy.
Now, my daughter’s hair is long and not so strawberry blonde anymore and she wears hair clips because she loves them not because she has to to look like a girl. She has a lot of hair clips from Lil’ Sugarplum and she stores them neatly on her Lil’ Sugarplum hair clip holder.
She chooses her hair clip carefully every morning before school.
Here are a few of her favorites. She doesn’t wear the gingerbread man to school yet but she’s practically counting down the days.

Madelyn has been wearing her pumpkin necklace from Lil’ Sugarplum for the last few days. She poses next to every pumpkin she runs into.

My daughter loves to dress up. If I told her we had to leave the house for a month and that she could take just one thing to play with, she would pick her favorite dress up costume. Every month, when the Chasing Fireflies catalog comes in the mail, Madelyn sits down with Post-It notes and marks every page that has something on it that she wants. By the time she’s reached the end of the catalog, she’s usually used a couple dozen Post-It notes.
Last week, Madelyn got to pick out a Halloween costume from the Chasing Fireflies catalog. This was not an easy task, let me tell you. We looked at this catalog during dinner, before homework, after homework, and in-between. Finally, after about 6 hours of looking at the catalog she decided on the Sweet Fairy Princess costume.
This week, her Sweet Fairy Princess Halloween costume was delivered, and she would wear it 24/7 if I let her. She loves it! She feels like a fairy-tale princess, she said. I have been stuck in bed for the last week and a half due to surgery so my husband helped her put on her costume for the first time. As he was helping her, he felt the need to remind Madelyn that just because she was going to look like a fairy princess, doesn’t mean she can act like a princess. She looked confused by that statement. Like she was thinking “whatever do you mean Daddy? I am a princess”.
The picture in the catalog doesn’t do the Sweet Fairy Princess costume justice. I wasn’t expecting nearly the amount of detail as this costume has and as you can see in the photographs above. The fabrics are perfectly delicate yet high quality and sturdy. Madelyn is a sweet girl, which is why she chose the Sweet Fairy Princess costume I suppose. This costume truly makes her personality shine. Maybe wearing a princess costume is the key to making her act like a princess 24/7? Hm.. I might have to try that.
Chasing Fireflies Halloween costumes make sure that your child is immersed in the character they are dressed up as.
Every snippet, thread, and ounce of their costumes encourages kids to be the character they are dressed up as whether they are a vampire, a princess, or a pirate.
Costume description from Chasing Fireflies website:

When your kids are heading out to trick or treat it is important that you keep them safe. Kids get excited when it comes to trick or treating, so you need to make sure that they know how to stay safe. It is also important for adults to take safety precautions when there are kids trick or treating on the roads.
Tips for parents
Make sure that your child’s costume isn’t too long. They could trip and fall.
Make sure that children have full visibility when they are wearing any kind of mask.
Check your children’s candy before they eat it. Some places offer candy x-rays for safety.
Know where your kids are going, if you aren’t going with them. If they have a cell phone make sure they have it on them so you can check in, or so they can get a hold of you in case of emergency.
Set a curfew for your children so that you know when to expect them home and are not stuck wondering about their safety.
Go over all the tips and rules for a safe Halloween with your children before they head out of the house.
Tips for kids
Don’t talk to strangers while you are walking alone.
Better yet, use the buddy system and don’t walk anywhere alone.
Only go to houses that have their porch light on.
Don’t run.
Look both ways before crossing the road.
Always say thank you after receiving your treats.
Do not vandalize anyone’s property. This is illegal. This included toilet papering, egging or just damaging decorations.
Tips for drivers
Drive slow.
Make sure your headlights are on.
Watch carefully for children running or walking into the road.
Have a fun and safe Halloween!
