Atlanta Moms: Fernbank Nature Quest Opens March 19th – Mark your Calendar!

Fernbank NatureQuest

I’m so excited to be attending the Fernbank NatureQuest preview.  My kids have loved every special exhibit at Fernbank, especially Animalopolis and the Gecko exhibit.  That was fun!  They are going to have a blast with the new NatureQuest exhibit which features 36 different types of hands-on participation and more than 100 ways to interact throughout.  Whew.. I’m going to be busy keeping up with the kids at Fernbank tonight!

Get ready to explore the nooks and crannies of a multi-level clubhouse. Shimmy up spiraling netting to discover the insides of a mighty red oak tree. Walk through a virtual waterfall and investigate the rock work and live animals behind it.

Fernbank NatureQuest will be filled with nature-inspired trees, plants and more. Children love to climb big, sturdy trees, so they’ll be excited to see there are opportunities to explore a cypress tree and a red oak from the ground up!

Atlanta Moms: Check Out Animalopolis IMAX at Fernbank Before it’s Gone March 17th

The kids and I saw Animalopolis a couple of months ago and enjoyed the singing lions, waltzing bears, and sea lions that turned somersaults.  Both of the kids cracked up at times and then I would see their jaws on the floor as they watched in amazement.  Animalopolis is an IMAX film great for the entire family but I recommend that you don’t take a child four and younger if he/she is sensitive to loud noises and big screens!

Showing through March 17, 2011*

You’ll give it two paws up!

Take a playful voyage into the magical world of animals in this giant screen adventure featuring rhyming narration and a classical music soundtrack. Whether going nose to nose with hippos as they graze upon nature’s massive salad bar, or eye to eye with dancing bears, Animalopolis blends fun vignettes with interesting animal facts.

Animalopolis takes a lighthearted and imaginary look at a variety of animals including cheetahs that race like a Ferrari, bears that run their own fishing school, an operatic lion, scary crabs that hold a town hostage and even attempt to cuddle with children, and much more.

Running at 32 minutes long, this film is a great opportunity to introduce younger children to the natural world and to the IMAX® experience.

Purchase tickets online or by calling 404.929.6400.

Atlanta: Chattahoochee Nature Center – Nature Exchange

Chattahoochee Nature Center - Nature ExchangeHave you heard about the Nature Exchange at the Chattahoochee Nature Center? This is one of Atlanta’s best kept secrets that shouldn’t be a secret. The Nature Exchange is a cool place where nature lovers of all ages can bring in their collections of shells, rocks, seeds (or almost anything from the natural world) and trade them for new nature items to expand their collection. Since the Nature Exchange opened in June of 2009, well over 3000 people have come in to trade and many more have explored the fascinating nature objects from around the world.

The real secret behind the Nature Exchange is that it’s all about getting outside and learning about nature. The trading value of an object grows based on how the item was responsibly collected, how interested the trader is in the object, how much the trader knows about it and on the effort they took to learn about it. Lots of fun learning tools, from microscopes to rock testing kits, are available to give you a learning boost.

You can learn more about the Nature Exchange at CNC by visiting their website at chattnaturecenter.org/nature-exchange. There you can get ideas about getting started and to learn about the new activities available each month. Better yet, grab your favorite pinecone or polished stone and come out for a visit. The Nature Exchange is included with general admission and is open during regular CNC hours- 10am to 5pm, Monday through Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sundays.
