Food Tip: How Do You Spice Up Your Pasta? A Tip for Picky, Pasta-Loving Families

I am a huge fan of pasta.  I could eat pasta 21 times a week (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) if I had enough in the house to fix.  Maybe that’s why these extra 10 lbs won’t come off?  I’m also a huge fan of sauce!  Yet another reason why I’m struggling with these extra 10 lbs.

As you might know, I am a Ragu “Mom’s The Word On Dinner” Ambassador, and I’m very proud and excited about that as you’ll see in this post.

Ragú® - Brand Ambassador campaign

That brings me to this week’s featured “Moms the Word on Dinner” video on the Ragu Facebook page which is about how families spice up their pasta.

How do I spice up my pasta you ask?  Good question!

Because everyone in my family has differing taste buds (to the extreme!), I prepare what I call ‘meals with options’.
For example, I cook angel hair pasta or my daughter’s favorite, rigatoni.
Then I will place a few sauce options and pasta ‘toppings’ as my kids call them, on the table.  Pasta toppings might include sautéed chicken, shrimp, red peppers, peas, and cheeses, to name a few.  Sauces include red pasta sauce, alfredo sauce, and lemon butter, most often coming from a what I like to call.. a jar.. full of ingredients that I can pronounce.

I don’t believe in forcing a child to eat a meal or a food that they have tried and don’t like so I am OK with offering my kids variations of a meal at dinner time.  I have found ‘meals with options’ to be a good solution for my family.

Plus, the table looks really pretty when it’s covered in small bowls full of colorful ‘toppings’.

Review: Scotch-Brite Bathroom Cleaning Products Make Cleaning the Bathroom EASY! #scotchbrite

Did you know that Scotch-Brite has a line of 7 bathroom cleaning products to help you tackle even the toughest bathroom cleaning tasks and that every single one of them is extremely useful?

Scotch-Brite bathroom cleaning products

Each of Scotch-Brite’s bathroom cleaning products serves a very specific purpose.  For example, the  Shower & Bath Scrubber, my favorite, has a heavy duty extendable handle that allows you to clean from the ceiling to the floor without getting on a step stool.   I scratched out tub once when I put a wooden step stool in it.. not good.  The Shower & Bath Scrubber is the perfect way to make your bath and shower sparkle from top to bottom easily.  My 11 year even old uses it.. not because he wants to.

My husband’s favorite Scotch-Brite bathroom cleaning product is the Grout Scrubber.   He got great satisfaction watching the tile grout go from a grungy brown to it’s original off-white color.  It’s such an easy tool to use.  I know I’m very lucky that my husband enjoys cleaning.

I used to use q-tips to clean around the faucet base but now I use Scotch-Brite’s Non-Scratch Angle Scrubber.  This is a great product for getting that orangy build-up off the base of the faucet and tub stopper.  Don’t tell me I’m the only one who has that  problem?   I use the scrubber side to get the grime off then the sponge side to wipe it away.  This also works well on awkward areas like the little bolt covers on the toilet.. ew gross.

Having a cleaning tool for each area of the bathroom saves moms time.  I have found that the more specific the tool, the more efficient it is and thus, it saves you time.  For example, if I use a big fork to strain pasta, that doesn’t work well, right?  I lose a lot of pasta! 😉  But when I use a strainer to strain my pasta, I don’t loose the pasta and that saves me time!  You get what I mean, right?  Use the right tools for the job and you’re bound to save time and energy!

Happy Birthday Desiree! @stressfreebaby

I’ve been working online for over 10 years on AtlantaMoms.com and for five years on TheMommyInsider.com and working online unfortunately means that I don’t have much social interaction with other people on a regular basis.  I was lucky enough to have met Desiree about a year ago and have grown to love her like a sister since then.

Happy Birthday Desiree

Desiree has taught me to crawl out of my shell or to try at least. Desiree is the life of any party.  I’ve learned from Desiree that “it is what it is”.  That’s what Desiree always says, and you know what.. she’s right?  As much as I hate it when plans change, when my husband doesn’t help with laundry, when I get two entries on a blog contest, or when I can’t fit into a pair of jeans I wore three months ago.. it is what it is and there’s no use in complaining or stressing about it.  Thank you for that little life lesson Desiree.

Here are a few more things I want to thank Desiree for:

  • Thank you for being someone I can call when I am stressed, excited, or bummed about something.
  • Thank you for trying to prepare me for BlogHer ’11.  🙂
  • Thank you for allowing me to help you when you need it.
  • Thank you for being a great travel buddy!
  • Thank you for showing me that it’s ok to talk to complete strangers.. except drunk guys with dogs in Miami! 🙂
  • Thank you for not telling me that the phone call I received from Madelyn’s dr. the Sunday we came home from BlogHer, worried you, until after the fact.
Desiree is an amazing woman.
She will help others before herself.  She works hard for her family.  Desiree is always coming up with new projects even though she doesn’t have an extra two minutes in the day.  Desiree is a wonderful mom.

Happy Birthday Desiree!

XOXO,

Alicia

Hummingbird Photographs

I love this time of year in Atlanta.  While I’m not too fond of the 95 degree heat, I love knowing that we will see hummingbirds regularly starting in July.  I put our hummingbird feeders out in early July this year and  it paid off.. with one visiting hummingbird.  After that initial hummingbird visit, I didn’t see another hummingbird for almost three weeks.  This last week however, they’ve been visiting like they own our front porch and I love it!  Yesterday, I had a stand off with a hummingbird or maybe it was telling me thank you for the food. I don’t know but it was a little freaky having a hummingbird hovering about 2 feet in front of my face for good 30-45 seconds.

I majored in photography during my first two years of college and seeing as how I went to college 15 years ago and haven’t pursued photography as a career, I have forgotten 95% of what I learned.  I’ve held onto my love of nature photography though.  Hummingbirds are so fast and tiny making it a challenge to photograph them.  You could say I like the chase.  I don’t have to chase my kids down to photograph them.  I just say “freeze!” or “you’re not getting dinner if you don’t let me photograph you in that outfit” and they’re game.  Hummingbirds are an entirely different story.  I find myself sitting on the front porch stalking them.   I am not one to get excited about much so thank you little hummingbirds for providing me with some happy excitement for a few months a year!

What’s your favorite thing to photograph? Your kids, birds, flowers, buildings?  Please share in the comments below.

My BlogHer ’11 Experience and a Special Thanks to BlogHer Heroes and Sponsors

I had an amazing time at BlogHer ’11.   Desiree, Stacie, and Niri are probably laughing really loud right now.  Seriously though, BlogHer ’11 was an EXPERIENCE for me.  If you know me, you know that I’m shy. I may have some Twitter followers, some Facebook fans, and I’ve built a site that gets over 100,000 visitors every month (AtlantaMoms.com) but when it comes to face-to-face interaction with actual human beings, I’m shy and that’s why I was a nervous wreck leading up to and during most of BlogHer ’11.  I felt most comfortable in the Expo hall talking to brands and learning about new and exciting products and services.

Do you know what made my experience at BlogHer amazing?  People and businesses and the support that they gave me.

Niri, Stacie, Alicia, Desiree at BlogHer

The People:

Desiree Miller from StressFreeBaby.com, Stacie Connerty from TheDivineMissMommy.com, and Niri from MommyNiri.com know that I’m shy (reserved as Desiree calls it) and were my BlogHer heroes.  It’s very important to me that they know that I couldn’t have done as well as I did, without them.. so thank you to you all from the bottom of my heart!  Each of these amazing women took me under their wing and made sure that I was comfortable and had something to do.  They were all great about introducing me to people they talked to which was so sweet.

I prepared myself mentally for weeks before BlogHer. I made all sorts of lists, printed all of my party invites, got a refill of Xanax, downloaded the BlogHer app for my iPhone and iPad, packed and repacked a few times, and thought I had it all together.

What a joke!  I barely used the app, I never used the printed party tickets, and I totally forgot to take Xanax the ENTIRE time.  My biggest fear is that people don’t give a flying hoot who I am or what I do which results in me not being the best at walking up to random people to introduce myself which is what you really should do at conferences like BlogHer.

I know and admire hundreds of bloggers.  However, while I’ve been blogging for over 5 years and have been attending blogging and social media events and conference for 4 years, I do not know many bloggers personally and I often wonder if some of them know who I am and if they do, what do they think of me?  Do they think I’m a bi**h because I don’t socialize enough, do they think I’m hideously unattractive (my unfortunate opinion of myself lately – sad but true), or do they think I’m ok but just don’t see the need to introduce themselves to me?  All of those thoughts were filling my head almost the entire time I was at BlogHer.. 5 days.

The Businesses:

Net Nanny parental control software for PC and Mac - BlogHer '11 sponsorI was thrilled to be sponsored by NetNanny, who makes the most incredible parental control software for PC’s and Mac’s.  To know that Net Nanny had faith in me enough to let me represent them at BlogHer was a great feeling.  I even got to meet and spend time with Melissa, the VP of Marketing.   If you haven’t already downloaded Net Nanny you can do that now here.

Invitation Consultants BlogHer '11 sponsorship winnerI was also chosen to receive a BlogHer ’11 Sponsorship from Invitation Consultants who makes beautiful baby shower invitations, baby announcements, birthday party invitation, stamps, photo cards, and other photo gifts.

What I got out of BlogHer ’11

  • People are amazing.
  • I learned that I am not invisible (imagine that!) yet I shouldn’t expect people to come up and say hello to me if I’m sitting by myself.
  • I got a lot ‘stuff’ (aka swag) – wanted or not.  Too much honestly.  I got rid of at least 20 pounds of stuff before leaving San Diego so I wouldn’t have to pay shipping or extra baggage fees.
  • I learned some grammar and writing tips (but I admittedly forgot them already.  I need a book)
  • I met some great people and saw some old friends including Jodi Grundig, J. Money, and Kim Vickers.
  • I learned that I shouldn’t attend 3-5 parties a night at BlogHer ’12
  • I learned that I don’t HAVE to put myself in uncomfortable positions (parties with lots of tall people).
Did you go to BlogHer ’11?  What did you learn about yourself and/or blogging?
