The Do’s and Don’ts of Layaway Plans

This a guest post by Andrea Woroch, a consumer and money-saving expert for Kinoli Inc.

Layaway PlansWould you rather put holiday spending on your credit card or pay for it through a layaway program? Many Americans are opting for the latter, helping retrench these time-honored payment plans.

Walmart, Sears, Best Buy and TJ Maxx are just a few of the major merchants now offering layaway. In fact, Toys ‘R Us has expanded its layaway program to include most toys, rather than just the big-ticket items.

Layaway nearly vanished before the recession, as credit card use grew in prominence. Stores preferred we swipe away because it was easier than handling all that paperwork. But with consumers leery of facing too much holiday debt — and threatening to spend less this year in stores — retailers began using layaway as a means of luring us back.

While this all sounds well and good, there are problems related to such programs. Here are a few “Do’s” and “Don’ts” you should consider before making the leap.

DO

Do Dissect the Fine Print
You’ll have to sign a contract or layaway initiation form, which naturally contains a lot of vital information you could easily overlook. Don’t let a long line or impatient clerk rush you through checking each detail so you know what to expect.

Do Consider Whether it’s Worth the Origination Fee
There’s a fair amount of paperwork, processing and labor involved in layaway plans, so stores charge a start-up fee for each order. Consider the amount of that charge is worthwhile compared to the overall total of your purchase.

Do Decide if You Really Need This Item
Should something happen and you decide not to go through with all payments, you’ll likely have to pay a fee of roughly 25 to 30 percent of the total price of the layaway plan. That’s a hefty fine for changing your mind, so make sure you really want the item before placing it on layaway.

Do Compare all Fees vs. Credit Card Charges
Add up the potential costs and consider whether you’d be better off placing a purchase on a credit card. According to a New York Times op-ed by Cornell professor Louis Hyman, a typical shopper could wind up paying far less interest by using a credit card, even if it has a fairly high APR. Plus, a credit card gives you purchase protection and, with some companies, price protection.

DON’T

Don’t Ignore the Internet
Don’t let a sale combined with a layaway plan talk you into buying before researching your options. You’ll often find better deals online and it’s a lot easier to comparison shop with your mouse. Search for promo codes to use toward your coveted item, and then compare the total cost of the online purchase to what you’d ultimately pay by putting it on layaway.

Don’t Neglect Your Expiration Date
There’s a limit to how long Walmart will store your stuff. As with other stores, they want to move it before Christmas, so check to ensure you have enough time and cash to pay the entire debt off on time or you’ll forfeit everything you’ve already paid. Mark that date on your calendar and make sure you make all payments before it hits.

Don’t Forget About Automatic Withdrawals
Some merchants prefer to set-up automatic checking-account deductions, ostensibly to save you the hassle of coming in to make each payment. In actuality, it’s just another way to make sure they get their money. Should one of those payments bounce, however, you’ll be socked with a healthy overdraft fee from both the merchant and your bank. Once again, mark on your calendar the date each deduction will be made, so you can double check the balance in your account.

Don’t Layaway When You Can Pay
It’s hard to part with cash during the holidays, when other expenses build up, but the fees you incur with a layaway plan aren’t always worth it if you can pay cash now and avoid the hassle.

Keep Your Kids Safe this Halloween with These Halloween Safety Tips For Kids

When your kids are heading out to trick or treat it is important that you keep them safe. Kids get excited when it comes to trick or treating, so you need to make sure that they know how to stay safe. It is also important for adults to take safety precautions when there are kids trick or treating on the roads.

Halloween Safety Tips for Kids
Tips for parents

  • Make sure that your child’s costume isn’t too long. They could trip and fall.
  • Make sure that children have full visibility when they are wearing any kind of mask.
  • Check your children’s candy before they eat it. Some places offer candy x-rays for safety.
  • Know where your kids are going, if you aren’t going with them. If they have a cell phone make sure they have it on them so you can check in, or so they can get a hold of you in case of emergency.
  • Set a curfew for your children so that you know when to expect them home and are not stuck wondering about their safety.
  • Go over all the tips and rules for a safe Halloween with your children before they head out of the house.

Tips for kids

  • Don’t talk to strangers while you are walking alone.
  • Better yet, use the buddy system and don’t walk anywhere alone.
  • Only go to houses that have their porch light on.
  • Don’t run.
  • Look both ways before crossing the road.
  • Always say thank you after receiving your treats.
  • Do not vandalize anyone’s property. This is illegal. This included toilet papering, egging or just damaging decorations.

Tips for drivers

  • Drive slow.
  • Make sure your headlights are on.
  • Watch carefully for children running or walking into the road.
Have a fun and safe Halloween!

Piper Hurricane Set from Kirkland’s – Review and Giveaway {Ends 10/20} #Giveaway

Kirkland's Hurricane Candle Set

We are lucky enough to have five Kirkland’s stores within 25 miles of us.  My husband and I both enjoy shopping at Kirkland’s because they offer such a variety of home decor items that are appealing to men and women.  He appreciates that the store is not overly feminine.  My husband loves the Piper Hurricane candle holders just as much as I do and we’ve come up with several ways we can use them every day and around holidays.  This Halloween, we are going to fill the small hurricane with fake eye balls (husband’s idea), the large one with pinecones (my idea), and the medium size one with wrapped Halloween candy (the kid’s idea).  Yum!   At Christmas time, we will tie holiday ribbon around the hurricanes and put candles in them.  Imagine how beautiful that will be!  Now, the hurricanes are on our dining room table, making a beautiful center piece.

Busy moms (and dads) will appreciate that the Piper Hurricanes are easy to clean.  Just use a damp cloth or glass spray and wipe any fingerprints right off.  The Piper Hurricanes’ openings are wide enough to put your entire hand into so cleaning them is not a problem.  I’m sure my kids will find a way to make these into scientific beakers or something.. anything that will make a mess!  I wouldn’t be surprised if I find a frog in one of them, one of these days.  That’s the way my kids roll.

Kirkland’s Piper Hurricanes can change the atmosphere of a room instantly!
Put candles or flowers in the hurricanes to set the mood for date night and for a more fun, vibrant look, you can get creative and fill the hurricanes with crayons, candy, or cookies.

About the Piper Hurricanes, Set of 3

  • Set includes a 7 inch, 10.5 inch, and 14 inch high hurricane
  • Crafted of glass

8×10 Kodak Photo Books are Buy One, Get One Free June 6-19 – Great Father’s Day Gift!

Kodak Photo Book

My 11 year old son came home from a one week Boy Scout summer camp Saturday.  Waiting for him on his bed was a Kodak Photo Book that I created from photographs that my father took of the ceremony at camp the night before.  (Side note: my father lives in Florida and drove to the camp the last day my son was there.)
When he saw the photo book on his bed, his jaw dropped and he asked “Mom.. HOW did you do that”!?  He was amazed that I (1) had access to photographs from his summer camp, over 8 hours away and (2) could create a photo book that fast.  Little did he know I didn’t make it by hand and that it took about 20 minutes to create. I created the entire photo book online at the CVS website.  First, I chose a theme, then I chose the photographs I wanted to include in the photo book, the page backgrounds, and typed the captions.  That’s it!

He was so excited to look at the photographs and it was the perfect way for him to tell me all about his week at camp.  Each photograph in the photo book prompted a detailed explanation of what exactly was happening at that moment, who was in the photograph.  Information that I otherwise would never have learned.

Photo Books are a great way to capture and store photograph memories for years to come.  I know my son will keep his Boy Scout Summer Camp photo book forever.  He’s so proud!
