First Time Family Camping Tips

Spring is a great time to get friends and family together and go camping.  Never been camping before with kids, or ever?  No worries! We are here to help!

Lake Camping 3

First things first..decide where to go.

One of our favorite places to camp when the kids were little and even today is at the lake.  This is where we do most of our “car” camping. What’s “car” camping, you ask? It’s basically where we pack everything but the kitchen sink for the camping trip!  For this type of camping, it is usually at a campground where we reserve a site ahead of time.

What do I need to bring with me?

If this is your first time camping, chances are you are going to have to purchase a good amount of items.  The upfront cost can be expensive, but once you have essential camping equipment, it’s a pretty cheap weekend getaway!   I always suggest purchasing good quality gear up front.  It may cost more, but in the long run, you will not be replacing it as often, if at all!

1. Tent

How many people are you going to sleep in the tent? On the outside of the text bags/boxes, it will show you how many people can sleep in that tent.  If it shows 4 people on the box, technically 4 people can sleep in that tent.  That does not account for clothing bags and gear that you have in the tent with you.  Usually, if I am trying to fit my family of 4 in one tent I use a 6 – 8 person tent to account for all of our gear and sleeping.  If you have smaller kids a 6 person will be just fine.  Now that my kids are 16 and 18 we use an 8 person tent.

2. Sleeping Bags

Sleeping bags have different temperature ratings.  I recommend a sleeping bag with a 32-degree rating and a fleece sleeping bag for a few different reasons.  The first reason is, in the summer months I use the 32-degree bag underneath me for more padding and then I cover up with a fleece.  The second reason is, in the fall/winter/spring I use my 32-degree bag as my main bag and then I can put the fleece inside if I need it for more warmth.

3. Tarps

Tarps have all kinds of usage when camping.  We use one under our tent to keep moisture from seeping under our tent and getting inside the tent. We also hang one above our tent so that way if it rains and we get out of our tent we are covered from the weather.  And we put one above the cooking area in case of rain so we don’t get wet while cooking! Plus it gives us a dry place to sit and eat or play games.  Do not buy cheap tarps!  They will tear up after a few uses and you will have to keep replacing them.

4. Head Lamp and/or flashlight

When the sun goes down, you are going to want a flashlight or a headlamp.  There are about 10 billion options available.  My favorite is the MagLite SP2201H Black Mini Flashlight.  It is small enough for little kid hands or for it to fit in my pockets but powerful enough to shine a good bit of light so I can see where I am going.

5. Cooking Gear

I cook at a campsite just like I do at home.  Really..I do!!  I have two camping boxes just for cooking equipment, including a full-size coffee maker.  I must have my coffee by the pot full, there is not an exception to this.  You are going to want a camping stove, fuel for the stove, pots, and pan to cook in, plates, cups, bowls, mixing bowls, soap, something to wash dishes in and to rinse them with. I literally bring everything under the sun but the kitchen sink!

I could go on and on with stuff that you need to bring with you camping.  REI has a pretty great list already made up that you can use to make sure that you have everything that you need! You can find the Camping Checklist here. You will not necessarily need everything on the list but it is a great guide to get you started.

Camping is a great way to get out of town and away for a weekend with the family. It helps to decompress and let the stress melt away.  Camping always helps me regroup and get centered again.  With the kids older now we seem to all be moving is different directions and never seem to be home together anymore, so it is wonderful to reconnect with my family!

These P&G Household Needs Products Have Been In My Life for Decades

This post was sponsored by P&G as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central. I received complimentary products to facilitate my review.

If you ask what brands I remember having in my home as a child, they would be Charmin, Bounty, Tide, Bounce, and Cascade and my mom’s own ‘brand’ of kids clothing.  I grew up wearing clothes my mom made for me – she didn’t actually have her own line of clothing in stores. 🙂  She was, and still is, a very budget conscious woman but she never compromised on home care products like paper towels and toilet paper and now that I’m a mother, some 30+ years later, I wouldn’t dream of it either.

REWIND 30+ YEARS

My sister and I played outside on our backyard swing set, the ‘old-fashioned’ metal kind – remember those? – and upon trying to enter the house, my mom presented us with a Bounty paper towel and require that we wipe off wet grass stuck to our legs, ankles and sneakers first.

As a child who grew up in Florida, one of my favorite pastimes was being a roly poly nurse.  That’s a real career as a 10-year-old, didn’t you know?   I wasn’t aware then that roly polies lived in other states as well and it was my assumption that they only existed in my backyard thus it was my responsibility to make sure they didn’t go extinct.  My job was to assess the health of roly polies on our back porch and for those that had something attached to them like a piece of hair or spider web, which would hinder their movement, I gently moved the multi legged bug to the roly poly hospital which was made of a few long lines of Charmin toilet paper for triage and paper towel lined shoe boxes for their after-stay.  I’m sure my mom loved my alternative use for toilet paper.   I gently set the cute little bugs, of which there were dozens at any given time, on the toilet paper then very carefully removed whatever was stuck to the bug so it could move about freely again.

FAST FORWARD 30+ YEARS

Jump ahead 30+ years from my days as a roly poly nurse and you’ll find my home filled with P&G Household Needs products just like my childhood home was all those years ago.  I stock up on Charmin Ultra Soft, Bounty Advanced, Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, Tide Pods, Swiffer Dusters, Febreze Air Effects, Cascade Complete Action Pacs, and more, at Costco once a month.

Bounty Advanced Paper Towels

My daughter’s birthday party was a couple weekends ago and I couldn’t have pulled it off nearly as neatly without my favorite Bounty Advanced paper towels.  Let’s just say the ice cream cake situation became a little messy and the dining room table and kids faces were in desperate need of a wipe down after enjoying the cake.  Bounty Advanced was by my side to rescue me from the mess that is stickiness.

Bounty Advanced paper towels are always a part of our craft time setup routine.  When I was a kid, we covered the table with newspaper before starting a craft.  My kids have grown up using paper towels because I realized they not only provide great coverage but quick access to a wiping cloth as well.

Bounty Advanced Paper Towel Craft

When Madelyn recently painted a piece of art for my dad, she relied on Bounty Advanced paper towels to keep the table and her arms and hands clean of paint.  She also used the paper towels to dab extra paint from the canvas and lightly smudge the paint for a textured effect as you see in the painting above.

RECIPE FOR A NON-DISASTER CRAFT TIME WITH MULTIPLE KIDS

During playdates, Madelyn and her friends like to get crafty.   Not the mess-free kind of craft like needlepoint or crocheting – duh!   They go all out and line the craft table with paint, bowls of water, glue, and glitter.  Then, just as any carefree child does, they paint pictures, shake glitter on the freshly painted works of art, after applying a glob or two of glue.   So, the recipe you ask?

  •        Bounty Advanced paper towels
  •        Tape

I line the craft table with paper towels, making sure to have enough to go over the edge of the table, then tape the paper towels down in a few spots along the edge.  That’s it.  What a difference this makes during clean up time.  The kids think it’s fun to bundle up the paper towels at the end of craft time and toss them in the garbage.   It’s the little details in P&G’s Bounty Advanced paper towels that make them different from other brands.   Bounty Advanced paper towels are stronger than any other brand of paper towels I’ve tried, ever.

When it comes to toilet paper I can’t imagine using any other toilet paper than Charmin Ultra Soft, the widest toilet paper available from Charmin.   My husband and son especially appreciate the how wide the paper is and I appreciate that the extra fluff which means we use 4 times less toilet paper on average.  The super-soft texture and fluff of the paper is just what’s needed when dealing with ‘that’ area.  My daughter comments about the yucky toilet paper in restaurants and other public restrooms.  What’s the solution to that?  Bring toilet paper in a zipper bag!  They are so used to Charmin’s ultra-soft feel; there’s no going back!

Cascade Complete Action Pacs are a staple in my house.  I can skip the pre-rinsing step before putting dishes in the dishwasher.  My kids *really* appreciate this as they don’t understand why a dish or pot would ever have to be rinsed before putting it in the dishwasher, so they don’t!   Now my kitchen smells clean and fresh every time the dishwasher is run and I know the dishes are going to come out clean and shiny every time!

Cascade Complete

I am at my Dad’s house in my home state of Florida where my P&G product attachments and loyalty began so many years ago.   As I write this post I am enjoying a delicious macaron served to me on none other than a Bounty Advanced paper towel.

We don’t realize how often we use everyday household products for reasons other than what they’re intended for.  Not things like Cascade which should only be used as directed, but paper towels and Swiffer Dusters are game for creativity in my house!  I left the Swiffer Dusters out last night and found Madelyn ‘dusting’ her LEGO city, AKA pretending the duster was attacking the city, this morning.  Below is a GIF I made from three of the photos I snapped while she was playing with the Swiffer.  She insists she was actually dusting her LEGOs at first.  Whatever it takes, right?

Swiffer Dusters

P&G has been a part of my life for at least 35 years, the years I can remember, and will continue to help my family, our dishes, and our clothes, stay clean for years to come.   Being able to stock up on my favorite P&G products in bulk at Costco is fabulous.  My mother and I go to Costco together sometimes and we walk out looking like P&G ambassadors preparing to film a P&G commercial.

When I’m home I probably use a P&G product every couple of hours and chances are, you do to! Besides the obvious, there are creative ways to use some P&G products including making cute flowers out of Bounty Advanced paper towels with food coloring and pipe cleaner.  Gently dampen a paper towel with colored water, lay the paper towel flat, pick the paper towel up by the center of it letting the four corners droop down toward the table, then twist a pipe cleaner around the portion that you picked up, making it the center of your flower.   Let dry.

I’ll end with this photo; one I took last week during a visit with my dad and stepmom in Florida.   The feet in the photo are mine, my daughter’s and my dad’s.  The blanket we’re laying on is one my sister and I used during our childhood in Florida.  This goes to show how we rely on and find comfort in the things we grew up around even if we didn’t appreciate them nearly as much as children, including toilet paper and paper towels.  🙂

Skype Mother's Day Video Chat

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching and while I am lucky to live five minutes from my mom, many of my friends mother’s live in another state or even another country.  No matter where your mother is though, Skype can help you send her love on Mother’s Day via a video chat and video message.  A video chat is so much more personal than just sending a card.  I do recommend sending Mom flowers, but a video chat will make her day!

How to prepare for your Skype Mother’s Day Video Chat:

  • Tell your Mom what time you will be calling on Mother’s Day.
  • Have your Mom download and set up Skype on her computer at least one day before the call.
  • Tell your kids ahead of time that you are going to call Grandma and tell her happy Mother’s Day.
  • Ask your kids if they have anything special they’d like to show Grandma or tell her while on the chat.
  • Create and rehearse a special Mother’s Day poem or song for Grandma.
  • Call your Mom at the specified time and enjoy the video chat!

Send Mom a Mother’s Day message via Skype’s ‘Mom, you rock’ Facebook application

Alternatively or in addition to a Skype video chat with your Mom on Mother’s Day, you can create a fun and unique message for her by visiting Skype’s Mom You Rock Facebook page.   Skype is celebrating Mother’s Day by offering a free video greeting card through their Mom You Rock Facebook page.

Mom You Rock is a charity campaign organized by Skype. For every ‘Mom, You Rock‘ video message that is sent, $1 will go to Save the Children’s Global Action Fund in support of the new MomsTheWord.org campaign.

Skype Mother's Day messagesUsing Skype’s Mom You Rock application you can create a special video message for a mom in your life in about ten minutes.  Say more than you can on a greeting card and best of all, Mom will see your expressions, emotion, and just how much you love her, in your message!  Your mom will need to be on Facebook in order to send her a special Mom You Rock message.  After you click on the Say ‘Mom, you rock’ image on the Facebook page, you will be prompted to choose a Facebook friend (your mom) to send the video greeting to.  Next, choose from three rockin’ songs to feature in your video message.  Last, personalize your Mom, you rock video with short messages like “Happy Mother’s Day”, “We Love You!” and more.  Then send or schedule!

Here is the Mother’s Day Skype message that I created for my mom:

1940 Census Images Released

1940 Census
On April 2, 2012, David Ferriero, Archivist of the United States, announced the release of the long-awaited 1940 census images. The 1940 census has long been of particular interest because of its pivotal timing. Coming at the end of the Depression but before the United States involvement in World War II, the 1940 census released images add a personal dimension to the fascinating overall snapshot of the census itself.

There were 132 million Americans at the time of this census. For the first time, images taken census maps, descriptions, and census schedules are freely available to the public in digital format. You can access the 1940 census images here.

There are 3.8 million images that make up the archive taken from over 4000 rolls of microfilm. You can search through this online archive for images relevant to your family members. Searches can be done by enumeration district number. If you don’t know the 1940 enumeration district number, you can find it either by entering the 1930 enumeration district number or by using a different search tool to help you determine the enumeration district number based on home address information. The archive isn’t yet searchable by name, although you can sign up as a volunteer to participate in the project to index the images by name.

When you do find an interesting image, the archive site also provides tools so you can share that image. You can bookmark an image you like so you can easily find it again in the archive. The social media tools integrated on the site make it easy to publish links through Facebook, Twitter, and other sharing sites. Finally, you can also download images to your desktop.

Through the archive site, the 1940 census released images will keep future American generations close to this greatest generation.
