What is Chasing Fireflies?

Chasing Fireflies - Queen of Hearts Costume
Chasing Fireflies - Queen of Hearts Costume

I had this grand plan of sitting down with my five year old at a quiet time and place to present her with the Chasing Fireflies catalog from which I would allow her to pick her Halloween Costume for this year.  Well, that didn’t happen.  While I was on the phone with a client, she found the catalog, picked it up and ran outside to the front porch to flip through the pages.  She was in heaven.  She wanted this costume, that costume, that tiara with that costume, those sparkly shoes with the other costume and she really wanted them all right then!
She said “mama, go check the mailbox, maybe they are in there”.
“No, baby.. we have to order a costume and then it will take some time to arrive” I said.

It took her about 30 minutes to narrow her selection down to one costume and since the moment I ordered the costume, she’s asked “is it here yet” about three hundred times.

The costume should arrive tomorrow and I will post photographs of my daughter wearing the costume then!

My daughter wearing her new Chasing Fireflies' Queen of Hearts costume

UPDATE: My daughter’s Queen of Hearts costume arrived today from Chasing Fireflies.   When she saw the bag with the costume inside it, she ran to the couch, laid down, and started kicked her feet and banging her hands into the couch while shaking her head back and forth screaming “I’m so excited, I’m so excited”!  I haven’t seen her that excited in.. forever.  Seriously, she’s NEVER done that before.   So we took the costume out of the garment bag and her little face turned bright red as she held her breath in anticipation.  (She’s really into dress up clothes!)  She put the costume on and hasn’t taken it off since.. it’s been about 2 hours now.  When she saw the neighbors walking their dog a little while ago, she asked me if she could go outside and show the little girl her new costume.  She’s so proud!

Visit Chasing-Fireflies.com and check out their selection of beautiful costumes.  The costumers are a bit on the costly side BUT if your daughter is anything like mine and puts on a dress up outfit right when she gets home from school most days, then you will see your return on investment very quickly, I assure you! 🙂

Review: Moon Dough™ Push n’ Pop Breakfast – Improved Formula!

Moon Dough - new and improved
Moon Dough Breakfast Push n' Pop Play Set

My 5 year old loves to play with Moon Dough™.  We reviewed the Moon Dough™ Barn play set a year ago and still plays with it.   The new, improved Moon Dough™ is easier to clean up, will never dry out, and is wheat-free and hypo-allergenic.

If you are not familiar with it, Moon Dough™ is a molding compound that is easy for little kids to use and shape as it is light weight and is not sticky and gooey.  The biggest difference with the new Moon Dough™ formula is that it doesn’t crumble.  This makes clean up quick and easy.  When my daughter is finished playing with her Moon Dough™ set, she puts the Moon Dough™ back in the supplied plastic zipper bags and tosses it into her toy basket.

Moon Dough Push n' Pop Breakfast play setThe Moon Dough™ Push n’ Pop Breakfast play set comes with 3 popper molds (waffle, toast, pancake), a play mat, 1 twist mold, and 2 packages of colored Moon Dough™.

What Madelyn says about Moon Dough:

  • I like it
  • And..
  • It’s super soft
  • and it’s easy “ta” use and easy to play with and clean up
  • My mom and me did a video..(deep breath).. and mmm..me and my mom played with it together
The Push n’ Pop molds are easy for my 5 year old to operate.  Simply push down gently on the mold and it will pop back up itself.  She found the twist mold easy to use to but it took her a few minutes to figure out that she can twist it to get the Moon Dough™ out.  She was trying to dig the Moon Dough™ out, so make sure you tell your child that he/she can simply twist the mold and the Moon Dough should pop right out.
To clean up Moon Dough simply use a small piece of Moon Dough™ and dab up the small loose pieces up and wipe with a dry cloth.
Moon Dough™ is recommended for children 3 and older.
You can buy Moon Dough™ from Amazon.com, Toys R’ Us, WalMart, and Target.  Set prices vary.

Disclosure: I was provided with a Moon Dough Push n’ Pop Breakfast play set for review purposes by Team Mom on behalf of Moon Dough™.  My opinions in this review are 100% mine and were not influenced by the company.  I was not compensated for the review and was not required to write a review.

Moon Dough..both of my kids love this stuff!

Moon Dough is an out-of-this-world new molding dough that never dries out and is easy to clean up!  See my hint (*) below.

Hypo-allergenic and wheat-free, soft and marshmallow-like, Moon Dough does not stick to or stain material. Because Moon Dough never dries out, kids can use it again and again.  Just be sure to set up a mat for your kids to play on so you can wipe it all up and save it for next time.

Moon Dough is the latest and greatest new molding compound for kids ages 2-4 to sculpt into fun creations they will love to play with. The line also offers a variety of enjoyable play sets.

Molding the farm animals is a breeze for my 4 year old and my 11 year old finds it really funny to make his own shapes and ‘alien animals’ with Moon Dough.

What I love about Moon Dough:

  • Moon Dough is easy for kids to mold into shapes
  • Lots of colors & molds are available
  • It’s easy to clean up!  Just use a ball of Moon Dough to dab up other pieces.  You can even vacum Moon Dough up.

* Compress Moon Dough into a ball before giving it to your kids to play make it less flaky and more fun!

How to host your own Fancy Nancy tea party

My 4 year old daughter loves Fancy Nancy books.  Her favorite Fancy Nancy book is Fancy Nancy and the Late, Late, LATE Night.  She likes it when Nancy says “that’s a  fancy word for..”.   She’s learned a lot of fancy words from Fancy Nancy books, that’s for sure.

Summer is slowly slipping away from us but while your kids are still out of school and looking for fun things to do, below are some fantastic (and easy!) tips on how to throw together a kid-friendly tea party…Fancy Nancy style!

HOST YOUR OWN FABULOUS FANCY NANCY SOIREE

Summer is here and what better time to celebrate and invite friends over for an elaborate tea party Fancy Nancy style!   Fancy Nancy has the most fabulous (that’s a fancy word for great) ideas on how to throw the most magnificent and fanciest tea party in the neighborhood.

Here are a few tips supplied by THQ to help you put on a great tea party!

1)      Select a spectacular theme.  Be as ornamental as you can be!

2)    Pick a charming location, and pique guests’ senses by taking them to different locales without leaving your own backyard. For example, Nancy loves speaking in French.  Host a French-style tea party, complete with French foods and desserts. Fancy up the menu and invites with French words.

3)    Prepare edible arrangements and delectable treats.  Surprise guests with petite hors d’oeuvres or squared cucumber sandwiches.

4)    Set the table with your most colorful and fanciest tea sets.

5)    Pin The Tiara on Fancy Nancy!  Purchase a poster of Nancy.  Blindfold your guests and have them tape a paper tiara on the poster. Whoever is the closest to Nancy’s head, wins a splendid prize!

6)    Have your guests create a fancy party hat and beautiful jewelry complete with all the glitter, jewels and ribbons one can find.  Ask guests to bring their favorite fancy dress-up item, such as a boa or a tutu.

7)    Don’t let anyone leave without a spectacular goodie bag filled with costume jewelry, delicious candy and a variety of tea samples!

THQ also invites you and your friends to an interactive tea party with Fancy Nancy Tea Party Time for Nintendo DSi™ and DS™! The popular children’s property Fancy Nancy, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, makes its video game debut on Nintendo DSi™ and DS™ systems this fall.   I don’t know how excited my son will be about the game but you can bet I’ll enjoy it!  In Fancy Nancy Tea Party Time!, girls of every age can play as Nancy and become the fanciest girl around.

* If you host a Fancy Nancy Tea Party, send us photographs.. we might feature them on The Mommy Insider!

Anderson Cooper on Regis & Kelly this Friday – He wants your school supply buying and budgeting tips!

LIVE! with Regis and Kelly are expecting Anderson Cooper to stop by (filling in for Regis.. didn’t Kelly just say she would marry Anderson Cooper if given the chance, a few days ago? Hmm..) this Friday morning. Anderson is covering the current flux in education funding and wants us to help him get advice, secrets, tips to families that need it most!! In anticipation of his arrival we need all you thrifty Mom’s, Dad’s Grandmas and Grandpas to put your heads together for Elementary School children across America!
What are some of the ways you maintain your budget and still send your little ones fully equippedfor school!? What are some training strategies, and lessons you’ve instilled about respect, honesty and safety?

With having a 10 year old son, I have 5 years of elementary school supply buying skills and tips under my belt and I am well aware that the changing economy and rising jobless rates are impacting every part of parents lives from simple grocery buying to health care and one necessity parents of upcoming Kindergartner’s have to think about is school supplies.  School supplies do not only include paper, pencils, crayons, and folders, but parents also have to consider travel expenses, field trip fee’s, clothes, shoes, backpacks, and yes, hair cuts.  All of these add up and all of these are necessary to help your child enjoy and appreciate their education.

What to consider when shopping for your Kindergartner’s school supplies and getting him ready for his first year of elementary school:

  • Buy notebook paper, crayons, and pencils in bulk when you are able to.
  • Character school supplies, clothing, and backpacks are more expensive than solid color clothing and backpacks and can cause conflict between students (you know.. some kids don’t like Batman while others love him!).
  • Talk to your child about why it’s important both socially and environmentally, for him to ride on the bus.
  • Ask your child who he would most like to carpool with so you can schedule carpool days with other parents to save on gas money.

Here are a few tips that I follow when getting my elementary age son ready for a new school year each year:

  • Buy one pack of paper, one pack of pencils, one notebook, and/or one pack of crayons, every week or two during summer vacation. Doing this will ensure that parents who are on a budget aren’t slammed with one big school supply bill right before the new school year begins.
  • I buy folders, pencils, erasers, and paper in bulk whenever I can.
  • Local consignment sales are often held just before school starts are a great place for buying lightly used backpack, school clothes, and shoes.
  • Remind your child how important it is for him to keep his hands clean while at school because not washing hands is a huge factor in spreading illnesses at school and when kids get sick, parents have to spend MONEY to go to the doctor!  Let’s teach our kids to was their hands so our individual health care costs go down!

Store Freebies and Coupons for school supplies

  • Live in a neighborhood with lots of kids? Chances are kids moving up to middle school have left over school supplies such as pencils, notebooks, and other things they didn’t use last year and can’t use in middle school that they would be happy to hand down to your child.
  • Check drug stores and office supply stores for penny sales and free-after-rebate items in July.
  • The Internet is a moms best friend! Visit coupon websites to find coupons for big brands like Bic, Post-It, and more.
  • Almost everyone knows someone who works in an office.. ask your friends who work in an office if they can give your child some paper, notebooks, pens, markers, and highlighters.

Local Church and Government Resources that may provide free and inexpensive school supplies

  • Ask your child’s school system if they have programs that give kids free school supplies.
  • Parents can contact their local United Way and Salvation Army to find out if they offer free school supplies.
  • Many churches collect school supply donations during the year and disperse them to families that need them before the next school year begins.
  • Check with your county school system to learn about their free lunch options for qualifying students.
