Travel Tips

Travel can be tricky when you travel with your family.  The flight to Dubai may be a long one, so here are some tips for traveling with your children.

  • Children often get board on planes. The fact of the matter is that each child can carry a personal bag on the plane. Make a custom activity bag for each child containing several activities they love.
  • Put a travel pillow in each child’s bag so they can take a nap on the plane. It is a great idea to try and avoid naps before you leave so children will be tired and can pass some time sleeping.
  • Always check the weather before you pack. Make sure you are packing for the conditions. Most weather websites will give you an extended forecast. This will ensure that you don’t over pack.

If you are looking for a great getaway, either for the whole family, or just you two then Atlantis, the Palm in Dubai is the place for you. It is a great cross between family fun and adult relaxation.

Enjoy!

Skateboarding, a safe sport, with the right gear!

disclosure

My son went through a phase when all he wanted to do was skateboard.  He would bring his skateboard in the car and skateboard everywhere.. at the park, in our driveway, and down my mom’s street.   I thought it was super cute.. I mean cool.  😉

I learned that it can be difficult to find a store, either online or offline, that specializes in skateboarding gear.  SkateHut is one online store that offers a great selection of skateboards and skateboarding gear as well as skateboarding tips and safety advice.  While SkateHut.co.uk is based in UK and is a great store to buy gear from if you live in the UK, it is also a great resource for U.S. shoppers to research skateboarding products and get ideas.

Skateboarding is a past time that many kids start when they are young and continuing doing for many years.  Your child is your pride and joy, of course, so stores like SkateHut offer protection essentials for them so you can worry less (well, probably not) and let them do what they love.. skateboard all over the place!

Skateboarding gear and safety

Is Skateboarding a Sport?

Skateboarding is definitely a sport. You’ve heard of the X Games right?  Skateboarding can be very good exercise for your child. What’s great about skateboarding is that it is a bonding sport, as well as competitive.  Kids can get together and skateboard as buddies as the park but when it comes to competition time, you bet it turns into a sport!  You can go to a skateboarding tournament just like you would go to a ball game, and with your support, they’ll become better athletes and come to know good sportsmanship.

Skateboarding Safety

Safety  should be your #1 concern, because no parent wants to see their son or daughter scrape a knee, much less break a bone. Pads of all sorts can be used for impact protection should your child fall or wipe out, and helmets are an essential must to all outdoor sports including skateboarding.

There are many options and styles of protective gear, and most come in different looks so your child can still feel they are expressing themselves while meeting the necessary safety requirements.

Stores like SkateHut customize skateboards to their standards, which can add to safety as well.   I quickly learned that if a board fits its rider, it is much safer.

Cool Skateboard Gear

Did you know that you can put pink wheels on your daughter’s skateboard?  Or your son if he’s into pink.. my son has pink lacrosse balls.  Whatever floats his boat, right?

Take a look at SkateHut.co.uk and get ideas for your child’s skateboarding gear and potential future in the X-games! 🙂

You never know!

Save Money By Shopping At Comparison Shopping Site mySupermarket.com

mySupermarket.com compares prices across Amazon, Walmart, Target, Soap.com, Diapers.com, Drugstore.com, Walgreens, and Costco and presents them in a single online store!

mySupermarket.com asked me to use their site and consider writing about my experience.  All opinions are my own.   I received compensation to be used on mySupermarket.com to facilitate this review.

I prefer to shop online for things like household items, cleaning products, some cosmetics, and other things that I know I like and use often.   90% of my household item online purchases have been through Amazon.com and I’ve always assumed that Amazon offers the lowest prices.  With my Amazon Prime membership I get free 2-day shipping on most items I purchase.  I buy everything from home cleaning products to handbags and shoes, online.   If I find a cute pair of shoes at a local store, I search for the same shoes online, while I’m at the store.  If the price that the online store is offering is within $8 or so of the price of the store where I am, I will buy the item at the store.  If the price is over at the store is $10+ more than what I found online, I purchase the item online.  Researching products that you use and buy often online can pay off.

Let me note here that I appreciate the idea of supporting local businesses and I definitely (like really.. too much maybe) support local stores like The Gap, H&M, Sephora, Target, and REI but if I know that I can buy the item for $10+ less online, then I do.. most of the time.

mySupermarket.com online comparison shoppingWhen mySupermarket.com contacted me and invited me to use their site you can only imagine how interested I was.  I was excited to learn that mySupermarket.com compares prices from 8 online shopping sites including Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target.com, Walgreens.com and more.

Here is an overview of my experience with mySupermarket.com.

Finding items on mySupermarket.com

Shopping on mySupermarket.com is easy and fun!   The tabs at the top of the site link shoppers to main sections of the site including pets, mom & baby, health, beauty, snacks, and more.
I prefer using the search box to quickly find what I am looking for.  When I entered “Tide laundry detergent” in the search box, I was taken to a page that features the many variations of Tide laundry detergent and below each product image was the best price being offered from online stores that mySupermarket.com compares prices from.   From there I clicked on the single product I wanted to see the prices for and to the right of the product image is a list of prices with the best price being at the top of the list.  Next to each price is the name of the store that is offering the corresponding price.   In most cases, the stores presented to me were Walmart, Target, Amazon.com, and Walgreens.

Walmart.com is where I ended up buying my choice of products from.  That was a surprise to me.  I hadn’t considered comparing Walmart.com to Amazon.com until using mySupermarket.com.

Discounts and special offers!

mySupermarket.com even presents shoppers with any special offers, discounts, and available coupons, for individual products.  Sometimes you will even find a buy 2 products, get 1 free offer for a brand such as Neutrogena.  For example, a search for “Tide HE 2X Ultra Liquid Laundry Detergent, Clean Breeze – 64 Loads” brought up a list of 3 prices and the last price, albeit the most expensive, had the text “buy 2, save $1.50” next to it.  Simply click on the coupon icon and it is automatically applied to your order.

Here is a snapshot of my purchase at mySupermarket.com.
The total for this purchase was $54.79 including shipping.

mySupermarket.com comparison shopping website

Here is the same order on ‘a popular’ online shopping website.
The sub-total total was $57.82 but the total with shipping came to $64.32.

online comparison shopping

If you are like me, you find it difficult to buy something that you know you can find for less somewhere else.  Whether it be between two local stores or online vs. local, it’s always good to compare prices.
One example of the HUGE savings that mySupermarket.com finds for shoppers is today’s price for “Kellogg’s All Bran Buds”.  The prices I was presented with for this item on mySupermarket.com today were from Soap.com and Amazon.com.  They were $20.50 and $30.14 respectively.   Prices can and do change, of course so the best price might not be the same now as it was earlier today but that is what makes mySupermarket.com so cool.. they keep track of the prices and show you the best price all the time!

Swap and Save

Once you’ve finished adding items to your shopping cart, click on the ‘Savings Center’ link to see how you can save money on the product in your card.  The swap and save function will present you will savings options such buying multiples of a product or choosing a larger size. Just click the ‘swap and save’ icon to amend your cart so you get the best unit price.  It’s that easy!

Since becoming a mySupermarket.com shopper and seeing how much time and money I have saved buy using the online shopping comparison site, I have created a list of things that I will buy through mySupermarket.com such as laundry detergent, razors, paper towels, and some cosmetics.  These are all things that I buy regularly and would rather have delivered to my door than have to spend my valuable time going to a local store only to pay a higher price.

Check out is finalized through the sites that offer the best price on the products you are purchasing and you will get a receipt from each site you purchase from.

Thanks to mySupermarket.com’s online shopping comparison tools, I know that I will save quite a bit of money and best of all.. TIME!

12 Blogging & Life Tips and Techniques I’ve Learned from 12 Years of Online Publishing

kids grow up fastMy kids have been out of school for a few weeks.  Enough said, right?

While I LOVE having my kids home with me and wouldn’t change that for anything, I run my business, AtlantaMoms.com and this blog, from home, and have for 12 years.  Summer break can be a bit stressful because I have to make sure the kids are entertained while I work.

Each year toward the end of the school year, I feel a sense of relief that summer break is approaching.   After all, with summer break comes fun family travel, and less chaotic days, right?  Wrong!!  Well, I suppose the fun family travel is right, but the days are not less chaotic when the kids are out of school, that’s for sure.

In the 3 weeks that the kids have been out of school, we’ve been to Florida and Indiana, and home for 1 week.  I worked about a total of two hours during each trip which odd as it sounds, stressed me out more than when I work a long work day.

Why is that, you ask?

When I’m working, I know that I am moving my business forward and being productive.  When I’m not working, I think about the emails I should be answering, the ads I should be publishing, the newsletter I should be editing, and the blog posts I should be proofing.

I worked very hard to create and build my business, AtlantaMoms.com, 12 years ago and like many business owners I had a difficult time giving up control of any part of the business so that I didn’t have to do it all.  The lack of desire to give up control of some aspects of the business didn’t last long though.  Within 2 years of launching AtlantaMoms.com, I had a full-time advertising sales representative who made tons of money, more than me it seemed (you know.. businesses expenses.. and all that), and she stayed with Atlanta Moms® for 8 years.  Giving up complete control was the best thing I could do for my business and I recommend that all business owners hire someone to take care of some tasks as soon as they can.  I was less stressed almost immediately after hiring my first employee and I couldn’t do without help now.  I thought surely no one would represent my business as well as I did, but I was wrong.

Having employees has given me the opportunity to spend more time with my kids.   My son was a year old when I started AtlantaMoms.com and I am so glad I’ve been able to watch him grow up and be with him every day to be there for moments like these..

my son growing up

No matter what, I will always want to keep tabs on my business even when I’m on vacation, but I know now that I don’t have to answer every email within 15 minutes and that it’s not a big deal to have over 30k emails in my inbox.  Speaking of email, I’ve known bloggers and other business colleagues to say a lot about having soo many emails in their inbox, but why is it a big deal?  No matter what, the emails are going to be stored somewhere so why not just keep them in your inbox?  Doesn’t everyone just use search to find an email? Who labels emails or puts them in folders anymore?

I expanded my business when I started this site, TheMommyInsider.com, in 2006.  I am equally proud of both sites and can’t imagine not having either of them.  It’s like having a second child.  You don’t think you could love another website as much as the first, but you do.

On that note, here are a few photos of my daughter, starting in 2007 and ending with a photo of the two of us taken just about a week ago, in June 2013.

my daughter growing up

This summer, I accept that there will be times when I can not check email more than once a day and I am not going to stress about it.   Please don’t quote me.

That is just one way I am going to make this summer less stressful than past summers.

Over the last 12 years I’ve learned some techniques that have helped me keep my stress levels down, in regards to business.

Here are a 12 blogging and business tips that I’ve learned in the last 12 years:

  1. Don’t try to respond to every email you receive within 15 minutes, or even a few hours
The people who send you the email have a life too and are probably not expecting a response right away.
  2. Don’t say yes to every blogging opportunity that arrives in your inbox
If I am not excited about the opportunity or don’t feel like it’s worth my time to travel or write about it, then I say no thanks.  Your time is valuable.  Make sure you are getting paid what you are worth!
  3. Write a blog post and leave it in draft status for a day at least
Mom bloggers often are distracted while writing a blog post.  Such is the case with me.  I have found that when I check a blog post a day or so after writing it and when I am not going to be interrupted, I catch more errors than if I publish it right away.
  4. Don’t hesitate to invest in products and services that will help you be more productive
I was stubborn for the first few years of AtlantaMoms.com being online. Paying for an ad server and an email newsletter service like Mailchimp were 2 of the best things I have done for my business and myself.  Paying for a good hosting service that will provide 24/7 support is a good idea too.
  5. Have a separate phone number for business calls
Use a Google number or get a second cell phone or landline that is 100% dedicated to business calls. Enough said.
  6. Use a Social Media Service like Hootsuite to monitor your social media accounts
If you use social media for your business, invest in a service like Hootsuite to manage your Twitter and Facebook accounts.  Hootsuite makes viewing messages that you have sent and received as well as all messages with a specific hashtag or user you’d like to follow, a breeze.
  7. Schedule blog posts and social media posts
Write blog posts and social media posts ahead of time when you have extra time and schedule them to publish later.
  8. Limit how many browser tabs you have open
I have been guilty of having 15-20 tabs open in my browser at a time.  That just sucks productivity like almost nothing else.  If a page was taking a few seconds to load, I would switch to another tab to read something else and forget what I was doing.
  9. Get small tasks done before tackling large tasks
Getting small tasks done before starting on larger tasks allows you to feel like you’ve accomplished something.  That’s always nice.
  10. Use an app/service like Feedly to keep up with your blogging buddie’s blogs
Having all the latest posts from your favorite blogs presented to you on a single site/page means you don’t have to visit 20 different blogs every day!
  11. DO NOT compare yourself to other bloggers!
    Just don’t do it..unless you’re into self-torture.
  12. Enjoy your kids
I can’t believe my kids are 13 and 7 and I started when my son was 1!  They have grown up so fast but I’m happy to be able to say that I haven’t missed any of it.

If you are a blogger or a work from home parent, please share your productivity and blogging tips with me below!
