Jabra - Sport Pulse Wireless Earbud Headphones

How Jabra Sport Pulse Fitness Wireless Headphones from Best Buy Will Help Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

Best Buy disclosure

If you know me, you know I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions.   It’s probably because of my fear of failure and thus I prefer not to commit to a resolution I am not 100% sure I can achieve and maintain.  While I didn’t officially announce New Year’s resolutions this year, this year is different.   I started my personal and very quiet New Year’s resolutions in December when I followed up with my physician’s request to see Jabra - Sport Pulse Wireless Earbud Headphonesa neurosurgeon and the neurosurgeon’s request for me to see a Yoga Therapist – amongst other professional physical therapy types.   I have been told by my physician and other doctors for a few years that spine surgery is a very real possibility for me and if I want to reduce that possibility I need to move forward, quickly forward, with a few types of therapy including yoga therapy, aqua therapy, dry needling, and trigger point massage.   In addition to these therapies, I need to exercise regularly, even if it is a slow-paced walk or going up and down our steps several times consecutively several times a day.  Sounds like a blast right?  Well… it is when I have my music or my podcast playing through my headphones.   Even though because of my injury I can’t pick up the pace to the beat of a good pop song, upbeat music or a super geeky tech podcast keeps me going for at least 30 minutes a couple times a day.

If you’re like me and you have a fitness or physical therapy goal you’re working to achieve and know the added boost of good music, an audiobook or podcast helps you get through the walk, run, steps, or strenuous workout, visit your local Best Buy store, the place to shop for headphones.  You will find dozens of brands, styles, fits, and price ranges.  One pair that I particularly find very cool are the Jabra Sport Pulse Fitness Headphones.

Mrs. Claus Wants YOU to Have a Heart-Healthy Holiday Season!

Influence Central disclosure statement

I have been taking a cue from Mrs. Claus and checking my grocery list twice the past few weeks to make sure it has heart healthy elements like Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamins D & E on it. Some foods that have Omega-3 in them are probably your’s and your kids favorites including salmon, sardines, walnuts, and even raspberries and kale! In order to get my daily dose of Omega-3 I not only take a fish oil dietary supplement but I have also been experimenting with smoothies as you might have seen in my post about my new Intel Tablet¹.  You might be wondering what Omega-3 is.  Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for human health but the body can’t make them, you have to get them through food.

Mrs. Claus heart healthStudies show that instances of heart attacks increase over the holiday season.  Sad, isn’t it?   Two of the most beloved holiday icons are leveraging their celebrity this season to bring attention to heart disease – the No. 1 cause of death in the U.S. Mrs. Claus is inviting American families to join her in making the same, heart-healthy lifestyle changes she and Santa are taking on this year to raise awareness for nutrition’s role in heart health.

Adding Omega-3 to your daily diet can help with such ailments as depression, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and ADHD.  Nutrition plays a HUGE role in the development of our children and eating a few raspberries, walnuts, a piece of salmon, or a kale salad, can possibly help reduce the risk of your child having heart issues, or even ADHD.  In addition to eating foods rich in ingredients like omega-3s, Vitamin D and E, and Beta-Glucan, the Clauses and I know it can be difficult to get all the essential nutrients we need from diet alone, so we’ve added supplements to our daily routine.

If you don’t get enough nutritional elements from your diet, ask your doctor about adding supplements like Vitamin D, fish oil and multivitamins.  I, like many busy parents, forget to eat lunch some days so I started taking a vegetable and fruit supplement as well as Omega-3 and my doctor recommended Vitamin D.   Your doctor should be able to do lab work on you to see if you are deficient in any vitamins and minerals.  Maybe getting lab work done to check your heart health (vitamin and mineral levels) is a great resolution for you for the upcoming New Year!

Let’s join Mrs. Claus!  Let’s offer our family’s healthier options this holiday season.  Mrs. Claus was kind enough to share some of her favorite heart-healthy recipes with us.  Click here to see four of her favorites (pdf view). There are tons of recipes for healthier cookies than what you and I might have used in the past as well as heart-healthy smoothie recipes your kids will love.  I’m sure Santa and his reindeer will appreciate a heart-healthy chocolate chip cookie and carrots for the reindeer!

To learn more about how your family can make heart-healthy choices this holiday season, visit ClausNutrition.com.  Mrs. Claus will track the progress made by Santa, as well as share tips from experts in nutrition and heart health.  To see tips and recipes, click on the “Links” icon on Mrs. Claus’ video.

Mrs. Claus had the opportunity to ask Dr. Michael Roizen, founder of RealAge.com, a few questions about heart health

Mrs. Claus’ Question:

What advice do you have for keeping heart health top of mind during the holidays and after?

Dr. Michael Roizen’s Answer:

Maintain a healthy diet, be active, keep warm, relax

Mrs. Claus’ Question:

Between Santa and myself, is one of us more likely suffer from heart disease based on gender alone?

Dr. Michael Roizen’s Answer:

No. Research shows the percentage of all deaths from heart disease is nearly 50/50 between men and women. Heart disease is not a gender-specific issue, but rather one that all of us should be focusing on.

Let’s take a peek at the Claus’ routine and see how we can improve our own routine to be more heart-healthy this holiday season!

My 3 Week Meditation Challenge + See What I Worry About & Tell Me What You Worry About..It’ll Be Fun!

This post is part of my Not a Perfect Parent Series.

Alicia Hagan - Aveeno Daily ChallengeYou might have seen on my Facebook page that I have partnered with Aveeno to participate in the #AveenoDailyChallenge for the next three weeks.  I was given the option of eating healthier, staying better hydrated, or de-stressing/meditating.

Despite the fact that I don’t really enjoy vegetables, I think I eat pretty healthy so I didn’t opt for the ‘eating healthier’ challenge.

I already drink a TON of water everyday so I didn’t opt for the ‘staying better hydrated’ challenge either.

What I was left with and what I really want to work on is de-stressing/meditation.

I think one reason I may get very stressed, besides just from being a parent, is that I don’t get a lot of sleep.  I started experiencing a lack of getting tired when I started going through menopause about 6 years ago.  I have since been diagnosed with insomnia and it is very difficult for me to fall asleep and to stay asleep.  I don’t lay in bed and think about things like bills or what’s on the schedule for tomorrow, it’s just that I don’t feel tired.  I mean, I FEEL tired and I just don’t want to think anymore, but my body doesn’t want to go to sleep.   In hopes of naturally conquering the insomnia, I’ve revised my bedtime routine to include white noise, listening to soothing music (the Spa channel on Sirius XM is great!), reading, a warm bath, sometimes I’ll exercise close to bedtime to see if that makes me feel tired, but none of these things lull me to sleep.  I just don’t get sleepy tired.  BUT my mind is exhausted and I’m useless by about 3am.   I either take something to help me sleep or I don’t sleep.

Does this sound familiar to you?

The upsides of not sleeping are that I get a lot done at night and as strange as it sounds I usually don’t feel tired for the next day even if I didn’t sleep.   It’s an interesting phenomenon really.  This has been happening for six years and you would very seldom see me yawn or complain about being tired.  Mentally tired, maybe but not sleepy tired.  I’m not one who looks forward to going to sleep and have often thought that sleep in a waste of time.  Since learning how important getting a good night’s sleep is though, I am trying very hard to change my thoughts on sleep being a waste of time.

The point is.. I hope that by practicing meditation, which I am doing as part of Aveeno’s #AveenoDailyChallenge program, my body will relax enough so that I can fall asleep naturally and be generally less stressed.

I can’t help but think that my stress level plays a part in my insomnia.  How can my mind and body relax when I’m so stressed even if I don’t feel stressed once I’m in bed?

I am the first to admit that I get stressed and worry, a lot.  This is not something I am proud of or think is because I have a more difficult life than other parents.   I never intended on being a mom who was on the go all of the time.  I didn’t want to be busy busy busy.   BUT, I have to allow my kids to participate in at least once after-school activity/sport each.  It happens to work out so that my son participates in two things which between the two take place on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and my daughter does two things which between the two, have her doing something after school every Monday, Wednesday and then on Saturday.   That leaves us with Friday to catch up on life, chores, play, and general family hangout time.

Then there are times when I get upset with myself for allowing myself to get stressed and worried when I have kids who are so happy and great!

Here are a few things I worry about

  • I worry about the kids getting hurt doing everyday things like going up and down stairs or walking outside without shoes on
  • I worry if I am going to have a nightmare that night
  • I worry about what’s on the schedule for the next day
  • I worry about how I am going to get both kids to their sports games that are at the same time on Saturday but two different places an hour away from each other
  • I worry about if the puppy eating enough
  • I worry about if there is laundry piling up in the laundry room
  • Did the dishwasher get emptied so dinner dishes can be put right in or are the dishes going to stack up?
  • Will my daughter be up too late on a school night because of my son’s lacrosse practice?
  • Is my daughter’s sniffle going to turn into a sinus infection?
  • Why does my son’s room look like a clothing store vomited it’s merchandise onto his floor and bed?
  • When is the right time to have him clean his room.. it seems like we’re gone all of the time.
  • Am I giving my daughter and son enough individual attention?
  • Am I paying enough attention to their homework and studies?
  • ..The list goes on.

Does your worry list look like this?

What kinds of things do you worry about?

Personal: About My Cervical Facet Joint Block Procedure And The Day After

Today is Day 1 after the Cervical Facet Block procedure I had yesterday afternoon.  This procedure was the 2nd I’ve had in hopes of determining if a permanent cauterization of the nerves is necessary or if I need more in-depth surgery to alleviate the back and neck pain that could possibly be a result of a car accident I was in a long time ago.   A Cervical Facet Joint block procedure is done to help determine whether a facet joint is a source of pain. Facet joints are located on the back of the spine, where one vertebra slightly overlaps another. These joints guide and restrict the spines movement.

I was a little nervous about the procedure because it is a step up from the epidural I had done a couple of months ago and I didn’t know what to expect.   I didn’t take meds to prep for my previous procedure but this time around, Dr. surgeon requested that I take anxiety medication, Lorazepam, an hour before the cervical facet block. I’m not a fan of mood altering drugs so I opted to take one pill per the pharmacist’s instruction but there were three pills in the bottle. I took one pill, felt fine, and 30 minutes later, the nurse called my name. The energetic male nurse asked if I was ” feeling good” to which I responded “I feel pretty normal”.   He said “aw, we’ll take you back anyway.”  – What was that supposed to mean?

We got to the room where after being attached to a finger oxygen reader, blood pressure monitor, and thermometer, it became a joke that I must have been trying out for a part on Walking Dead as I had no pulse or blood pressure. I wanted to bust out my best zombie groan but couldn’t muster up the strength given how anxious I was feeling.  A few minutes later a nurse entered the room with a brand new set of vital checking tools and sure enough I had a pulse and decent blood pressure!  Hooray! :).

Cervical Facet Joint and Nerve Block

Then Dr. surgeon comes in and after a formal shake of hands, he asked me how I was feeling to which I replied “fine..just about normal” and he demandingly replied “take the other two pills”. I jokingly asked if my husband was going to have to carry me out of the facility if I took all three pills then my husband chimed in and said maybe the staff would be graced with Alicia’s showtunes performance after all three pills kicked in! Fast forward 30 minutes later..to my knowledge all the pills did was make me tired after the procedure for about 6 hours.

Once I got into the sub-zero degree procedure room, I was asked to slide my tops and bra down and lay on the procedure table. It was much like a masseuse table with a hole where my face could rest. Then..entered two more nurses.  Between the two nurses, they learned my life story in about 3 minutes. Husband’s name, address, phone number, medical record number, etc.  – all of which I answered firmly and abruptly. I quickly learned that they were testing me to see how well the meds had taken effect. I told them that I was fine and to move forward with the procedure when Dr. surgeon jumped in to remind me to take 3 pills at once next time.

Once he started talking and prepping for the procedure I completely understood why 3 well absorbed Lorazepam would have been helpful.

He was asking for needles, writing on my back, tilting a machine this way and that way to make sure he could see the exact areas of the spine he needed to work on. Then the kicker.. “Ok Alicia, I’m going to give you a numbing shot”. Ok doc I said. One shot, two shots, three shots, four.  Five. Ok. What’s going on?  After the 5th shot, one of the nurses told Dr. Surgeon that I should be ready.   Seriously, you just gave me 5 shottttssss.  Yeow!  I felt a big fat needle with some kind of wirey thing attached to it hit my spinal column. Fun!  My hands became one with the table and and if I remember correctly I played some mad tapping tunes for my audience of Dr. Surgeon and nurses.  I was tapping all sorts of tunes on that table including Jeses Loves Me, Roar, and one I made up about getting the F off that table. Luckily no one can decipher my taps except me.

After he made sure to insert plenty of needles and wirey things and twist each of those things to his delight, the procedure was pronounced finished and I was ready to jump off the table and launch out of there like a rocket but ended up being wheeled out in a smooth wheelchair. Sweet!

Fast forward to today, not quite 24 hours after the procedure, I shed a few tears upon waking, took something for pain, and am looking forward to when the injected meds kick in in 6-7 days. You read that right.  It’s all good. I really hope this procedure works and allows me to play with the kids on the floor again, turn my neck independently of my body, do yoga, etc. all those things I haven’t been able to do in years but think I’ve pulled off pretty well.

To top it all off, Madelyn is home sick today, I still have to work, and I have to drive Sebastian 3 hours to a Boy Scout camping trip tonight.

September is Baby Safety Month – Have you Taken the KEY Pledge Yet?

September is Baby Safety Month and whether you have a baby or are planning to have one, safety is always a top priority, especially when it comes to your little ones!

Because it is Baby Safety Month, we want to share a few of our favorite tips that you can follow in your home to help make sure the babies in your life are kept as safe as possible.  Please feel free to share your baby safety tips in the comments below.

Research which baby gear you should or should not buy used

When I was pregnant with my first child, my husband and I thought we would beat the baby store system (and prices) by shopping for used baby gear.   Being the avid researcher I am, I quickly learned that while used baby gear can help financially, buying used is not always the best for your baby.   For example, car seats are a baby product that you should always buy new, not used.  Certainly, it is good to save money wherever you can, but not when that money compromises the safety of your child. Be aware that when purchasing used cribs, strollers, car seats, high chairs, and play activity stations, there is potential for an item to be broken or for pieces to be missing. Baby equipment goes through a lot of wear and tear with each child, and secondhand products can sometimes be dangerous.  Check for recalls on products and look for pieces that appear cracked or missing. The safest alternative is to buy new products, but if you have to buy used, do your homework and keep your child safe.

Have your baby’s car seat checked for proper installation

Child safety seats can greatly reduce the risk of infant and toddler fatality in motor vehicle accidents. Unfortunately, although many people buy safety seats for their child, often times they are installed improperly. Take precautions to make sure your seat is properly installed by securing all straps, making sure the harness fits snugly, and that the seat is facing the correct direction in your vehicle. To confirm that your seat is installed correctly, check the NHTSA website and find the baby seat inspection location nearest you!

Baby-proof your house

One of the easiest ways to keep your child safe is eliminating dangerous areas inside of your house by installing baby gates and padding furniture.  I did plenty of that when my kids were babies…maybe too much. Make sure that all cleaning products, including laundry room items such as single-load liquid laundry packets, are out of reach and sight of children.  In fact, it would be a good idea to close off your laundry room entirely to prevent accidents from occurring.  The laundry room is not a playroom…   Since single-load liquid laundry packets hit store shelves, more and more parents have been using them for their convenience and ease of use.  However, people may not realize each packet contains highly concentrated detergent and should be treated like any other household cleaning product – store them out of reach and sight.  If not safely stored, the laundry packets can pose potential hazards attracting dangerous interest from young children leading to injury from ingestion or exposure to the eyes.

KEY Pledge ACI Baby Safety Month September 2013

This is so important that the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) launched the KEY Pledge campaign to spread awareness and education for single-load liquid laundry packet safety.

Take the KEY Pledge at KeyPledge.com and follow ACI’s simple steps to a safe laundry room and routine:

Keep single-load liquid laundry packets out of the reach of children

Educate your family and friends about the safe use and storage of these new laundry products

You serve a key role in laundry safety

Once you take the KEY Pledge you will see a heat map where you can track pledges and follow progress across the nation and in your home town on a heat map.  Georgia is doing pretty well but it looks like California, Florida and may be beating us!  Show your state pride and get (or keep) your state on the KEY Pledge leaderboard!

Since September is Baby Safety Month, use this time and these tips to properly educate yourself, family, and friends about ways to improve baby safety this month and always!

I am working with the American Cleaning Institute on their KEY Pledge campaign because it is important to me to help spread the word about how to safely use, store and handle single-load liquid laundry packets.
