Tired of Insomnia? So Are 4 Million Other Americans!

Influence Central Disclosure Image

sleepMy husband and I were laying in bed.  He, drifting off to sleep while I was twitching to get up and be productive.  I rolled over and said “you know, sleeping is such a waste of time”.   He was in absolute shock.  It was as if I called his Ford Mustang  the ugliest car in the world, in the meanest way possible.  He values sleep like I would value the idea of living on an isolated island surrounded by peaceful ocean waves, palm trees, and no mosquitos – a lot!

Tim can lay down and be asleep within 3-5 minutes – in just about any situation including camping in a hammock, after playing with the kids on the floor, and even on a staircase.   Yes, that really happened.  If only I could find the photo to show you.   He’s not narcoleptic, he’s just chill and relaxed, without a care in the world.  Many men are like that.  That’s not a familiar scenario for many women.   Women are multitaskers, not necessarily a fabulous trait, I’ve learned.  Our brain tries its hardest to multitask even when we’re in bed trying to go to sleep or when we wake up in the middle of the night.    I thought my inability to fall asleep as quickly as my husband and to be able to stay asleep all night was because I was thinking too much about work, what’s on the agenda the next day, or health.

For me, insomnia began after my car accident.  My body changed, hormones and all, causing major changes including the lack of being able to fall asleep or stay asleep.  I stayed up for nights on end.  Granted, I created some amazing scrapbooks of the kids early years those sleepless nights but I was exhausted after about 72 hours of being awake.  And cranky.  And completely unproductive.  After this bout of sleeplessness happened several times over a 4 month period I talked to my doctor about it.   She requested lab tests (hormone, etc) and diagnosed me with chronic insomnia pretty quickly based on the results and my input.

Fast forward several years.   Since being diagnosed with and finally accepting I have insomnia and it’s not just my ADHD keeping me awake, I have made changes to my evening routine that help me get to sleep and stay asleep.

Five of my Insomnia Conquering Habits

Keep in mind that my doctor and I have found that doing these things works best for me, but they may not work best for you.

  1. I turn my iPhone, iPad, and Kindle off after being in bed for 30 minutes.  I allow myself to watch a show on my iPad or read a book on my Kindle for 30 minutes.  Doing this allows my brain to slow down.
  2. I turn all the lights of in my bedroom, bathroom and nearby hallway.  Even the faintest light can cause trouble when trying to fall asleep.
  3. I refrain from drinking water after 7pm.   I’ve found that when I drink after 7pm, I’m more likely to wake up having to go to the bathroom.  Once I’m awake, that’s it.. I’m awake for the rest of the night.
  4. I am not afraid to take medication to help me get to and stay asleep when needed.  I am a much better person when I’ve had 6-8 hours of consistent sleep.
  5. Don’t worry about sleep.  I used to worry about falling asleep quickly and being able to stay asleep.  Everyone knows that worry doesn’t usually help a situation so I decided to go with the flow and assume every night I was going to fall asleep and stay asleep.

As a parent with many daily responsibilities, laying our heads on our pillow and closing our eyes at the end of the day proves to be one of the most important steps we can take to stay healthy and be in top shape ourselves and for our kids.   But a new survey shows that on average, nearly three-quarters of Americans are missing out on almost three weeks of sleep per year.   Yikes, that comes out to 470 hours!  As I entered my adult years, I noticed that lack of sleep was glamorized.  Successful friends and peers would boast about how little sleep they got and how busy they were.   I was never that type – before my accident.  I was the first to fall asleep at slumber parties and never felt like I missed a thing by going to bed early.  I wanted to sleep.  My parents wanted me to sleep.  As you can see from my more recent life history, that hasn’t been the case since my car accident, but people change.  Our bodies change and these changes, especially when it comes to lack of sleep, should not be ignored.

Getting a full, uninterrupted night of sleep has many benefits allowing us to put our best foot forward on a daily basis and even proves to boost performance and spur creativity.  Our kids need us to be at our best and sleep helps us achieve that.  But sleeplessness has become a widespread health issue – with 4 million Americans suffering from chronic insomnia, including difficulty falling asleep and the inability to stay asleep throughout the night.

Fortunately, there are simple steps you can incorporate into your daily strategy to improve your sleep, like those I listed above that I’ve incorporated since being diagnosed with insomnia.  Exercising early enough in the day to give your heart time to slow down before bedtime, limiting use of technological devices before bed and blocking out light are three important habits to take on if you’re having trouble sleeping.  But for people with insomnia practicing these habits alone may not be enough.  The good news is no one needs to suffer. There are effective treatment options available without worrying about risk of abuse or physical dependence.   The first thing you need to do is have a conversation with your doctor.  Tell your doctor how active you are, what your diet is like, and what distractions and worries you might have as well as the symptoms you experience related to sleep or lack of.

Banana Boat Sunscreen

Protect Your Skin During Your #BestSummerEver With Banana Boat Sunscreen + Great Big Family Reunion Sweepstakes!

Banana Boat Disclosure

It’s hot in Atlanta.. 97 degrees hot – and I, for one am a bit tired of it.  We had our backyard ‘renovated’ a few weeks ago so we could enjoy it more while sitting on the back porch but it’s too hot to sit outside for more than 5 minutes at a time.  The kids are having a blast though.   Madelyn and Sebastian are like fish.  They love being in the water whether it’s a lake, beach, pool, or river.  Sebastian is more of a river and lake kind of guy while Madelyn’s a pool and beach girl.   Needless to say we spend a lot of time outdoors, water or not.  They’ve been attending an outdoor nature camp for the past few weeks and you can only imagine how sweaty they get from being out in the heat all day.  I rarely hear a complaint from them come pick up time.  How do they do it?  I’m a cranky mess after being outside for ten minutes, let alone 8 hours!

Swimming

With summer sun comes summer fun!  Summer is a great time for the whole family to get together and have fun outside no matter if it’s in your backyard or at the beach.   We keep plenty of sunscreen on hand 365 days a year so that when it is super sunny outside or when the kids are going to ge swimming, we have enough to reapply several times throughout the day.

We’ve been using three Banana Boat® products for about a week as we play and work outside.  The kids, being at summer camp around sandy lake shores, used Banana Boat®’s lightweight SunComfort™ Clear UltraMist®Sunscreen which even after applying, sand brushes off the skin easily – almost unheard of after applying sunscreen, and it is water resistant for up to 80 minutes.

I really like Banana Boat’s Sport Performance Lotion Sunscreen with Powerstay Technology.  The lotion’s formula is light-weight, sweat resistant, water resistant (up to 80 minutes), quick absorbing, non-greasy and won’t run in eyes. I sweat like mad when I’m working in the garden and nothing stops me from pulling weeds and trimming bushes quicker than my eyes burning from sunscreen dripping into them.  Powerstay Technology boosts staying power to provide heavy duty protection throughout all outdoor activities in lotion form.

Banana Boat® has reformulated its Dry Oil Clear UltraMist® Sunscreen to now include argan oil –  a product used often on hair and skin.  This unique lightweight dry oil formula goes beyond sun protection, leaving skin feeling silky-smooth and moisturized and delivers one touch spray for quick, easy coverage with a light-weight, non-greasy feel.

Sunscreen Application & Usage Tips

  • Banana Boat Kids SunscreenApply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to you and your kids’ entire bodies 30 minutes before going outside.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.
  • Use the type of sunscreen that your child enjoys most.  It’s important to make the process of applying sunscreen easy and enjoyable, not a dreaded task, so if your child prefers a spray sunscreen, stick with Banana Boat’s SunComfort Continuous Spray SPF 30 or 50+.  If your child prefers a lotion sunscreen, use Banana Boat Sport Performance Sunscreen Lotion.
  • Use sunscreen everyday.  Your child’s skin can be harmed by constant sun exposure, whether or not your child sees or feels a sunburn.
  • Make it a habit to carry sunscreen with you all the time!  I have a sunscreen stick in my purse and I keep sunscreen spray in my car and our pool/beach bag.
  • It is widely thought that if sunscreen is used regularly by children through the age of 18, there would be a 72% reduction in the cases of skin cancer later in life.

My kids are well aware that with the heat and long days of summer sun comes exposure to dangerous UVBs, the burning rays of the sun.   Applying sunscreen is part of our routine, whether it’s 97 degrees or 50 degrees.  You might think that’s strange but protection from sunburn is not the most important reason for wearing sunscreen.  You want to reduce damage from the sun. Your skin can be harmed by constant sun exposure, whether or not you see a burn. Sunburn is an immediate reaction, but damage from the sun occurs over a lifetime.  You don’t want your child either now or as an adult to experience skin cancer.

My daughter experienced melanoma at just five years old.   A tiny mole developed on her upper arm.  The mole got larger and larger so I took her to the pediatrician who immediately referred her to a dermatologist.  The dermatologist told me he needed to do a biopsy right away and I got a phone call a few days later telling me I needed to bring her in that day to have the melanoma removed.  I was beside myself – melanoma on my five year old?  That was a horrible couple of weeks.  She’s fine now and we have since started using sunscreen daily, not just in the summer.

Child melanoma photo

I am not trying to scare you into using sunscreen but I want you to see the reality of skin cancer.  My daughter’s pediatrician couldn’t confirm that the melanoma was a result of too much exposure to UV rays – we’ve always used sunscreen and often wear sunhats and UV protective clothing, but no one is immune to skin cancer.  Not even children.  Lessen the chances that your child will experience something like what my daughter did by applying sunscreen everyday.

Enough of the serious stuff!

We took a road trip to (HOT!) Washington D.C. at the beginning of the summer to see my husband’s brother and wife and we’re travelling to the beaches of North Carolina when the kids are out of summer camp.   We’re staying at a beach house with two of my Aunts, two cousins, three of my cousins kids, and my mom, and of course my kids and my husband!  It’s going to be a full house and we’re already stocking up on games, beach toys, and sunscreen for our great big family reunion!  It’s so important to spend time with family, no matter how far away they live, so start searching for the perfect destination for your next family get together!

First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test

Kick Suspense To The Curb With First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test

First Response Disclosure

For those of you who aren’t regular readers, I have a little backstory to share with you before going into detail about the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test.

First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test

I am a 40-year-old mother of two.  My kids are 15 and 9 years old.  My son was conceived without issue and my husband and I doted on him 24/7/365.  When Sebastian was almost two years old, I was in a car accident that left me with physical and emotional injuries.  The injuries included muscle and nerve damage in my right arm and leg and a neck injury.  I was in physical therapy for quite some time. It was devastating to me that Tim and I could no longer go on our morning mountain hikes with Sebastian in a backpack on Tim’s back and that Sebastian and I couldn’t go to storytime or the scrapbook store on a whim.  I couldn’t drive for a long time after the accident and there was no way I could hike a mountain.  The accident left me physically scarred and emotionally worn, with life changing implications I didn’t even realize at the time.

My husband and I knew we wanted to have a second child but for two years after the accident it was near impossible for me to think about carrying and birthing a baby with so much else going on with my body.   When Sebastian was about 4 years old, about 2 years after the accident, things started getting back to normal with my body.  So I thought.   I started a business working from home, we were active outdoors again – albeit not as active as pre-accident, and we started talking more seriously about having the second child.    Thinking about it now, what happens next seems like a slap in the face.   Hot flashes, night sweats, my periods stopped.  Just. Like. That.   My mother didn’t go through early menopause.  My older sister hadn’t gone through menopause.   I visited with my OB/GYN during which she ran a bunch of tests.  A couple weeks later we found out that I was experiencing Premature Ovarian Failure.

WHAT?!  I was 30 years old!

My OB made it clear to my husband and I that if we wanted to have a second child we needed to act fast.  She prescribed a hormone that I would rub on my inner arm twice a day and recommended that we use an ovulation test.  Our first stop was to the drugstore where we bought a First Response Ovulation Test Kit.

For the next few months, my days consisted of applying hormones to my arm, taking ovulation tests and enjoying time with my husband. 😉   Within 3 months and thanks to First Response Ovulation Tests and First Response Pregnancy Tests, I was pregnant with my daughter!

First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test

Pregnancy tests have gotten more accurate and with earlier detection since 9 years ago when I was using one every day for months, and now, First Response takes the mess and suspense out of the equation when you’re trying to get pregnant, with the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test – with Comfort-Sure Design features.  The FDA approved pregnancy test has a 50% wider tip and is longer, making it easy to use and easy to read and it can detect all relevant forms of urinary hCG throughout pregnancy.   Available at all major drugstores, mass and grocery stores with a retail price of $8.99-$15.99, the test is easy to pick up on a whim or to stock up on.

Whether you’re in a situation like I was where you’re fighting your biological clock or you are just anxious to find out if you’re pregnant, the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test will let you know if you’re pregnant up to 6 days before the day of your missed period, morning or night.   Easy-to-read results are shown in 3 minutes with over 99% accuracy from the day of the expected period.

Get Fit for Spring and Summer! Join my Dietbet!

A couple of months ago I was invited to join a 4 week weight loss competition on a website called Dietbet.   I paid $35.00 to join and over the course of 4 weeks I had to lose 4% of my weight which was 5.8 pounds.  At the end of the 4 weeks I lost 6.6 pounds!  What did I win you ask?  I won $50.00 but more importantly, I got my eating habits under control, started working out almost every day, I had more energy, felt great about how I looked and just overall felt better.

Diet Bet

Then the holidays hit.  I did great with Thanksgiving and didn’t over eat.  I kept my portions small while still eating everything that I wanted to on Thanksgiving.  I felt great that I had made it through the first holiday with no weight gain!  But the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas was brutal!  All the cookies and candies – everywhere I turned there seemed to be food!

Fast forward to this week..

I stepped on the scale and I saw that I gained back over half of what I had lost a few months ago.  I needed to get back on track and get started on the right foot for the rest of this year.  So I started my own Dietbet.  I want to start eating healthy again, get all of the junk food out of my house, and start exercising on a regular basis.

You too can join my Dietbet!

Do you want to lose weight and get motivated to start exercising?  Dietbet may help you get back on track!  You can join here. Weigh-in is this Saturday/Sunday Don’t worry you can make your profile private so no one can see what you weigh.  Yes.  This is a competition BUT everyone that meets their goal wins their money back and then if we have people that do not meet their goal that money goes into the pot and gets split between those that do meet their goal.  I would love it if everyone meets their goal and wins their money back!

Have questions?  You can see what Dietbet it all about here or you can email me at kim@themommyinsider.com.  I am looking forward to going through this journey with you!

Stress management tips for kids

6 Tried-and-True Stress Management Techniques for Kids

If you are a long time reader here, you know I have two kids; a 15-year-old son and a 8-year-old daughter. Having kids so far apart in age and opposite gender makes it difficult to give each child the attention I feel they need whether it’s by helping with homework, entertaining him or her, or mediating a disagreement between the two.

I feel like I’m constantly being torn between two lives, the life of being a mom to a single-child daughter and the life of a mom of a single-child son. Sounds weird, I know.. but that’s the best way to describe how I feel. It really stresses me out that my kids don’t interact with either other the way I hoped they would but I have to also keep in mind that life is not a piece of cake for them, for the same reasons it’s not a piece of cake for me. They get stressed too and I’ve been on a mission to learn the best techniques to alleviate that stress in my kids.

That said..

Thеrе аrе many reasons аnd circumstances thаt саn cause stress іn kids, not just having an opposite gender sibling with a large age gap. Evеrу child faces stressful situations іn his or her life since due tо school problems, family problems and even peer pressure. Tests аnd class work grades аrе a major cause оf worry аnd stress іn children. Similarly stress іѕ аlѕо caused іf thе child finds оut thаt hе іѕ different frоm thе rest due tо аnу physical deformity. I’m not talking about major deformities here. My daughter has a couple of teeth that are growing in awkwardly and she has come home from school on more than one occasion to tell me that a classmate said her teeth look weird. Since then, she’s been anxious to get braces.

Stress management tips for kids

Children find іt difficult tо endure stress; аnd thе problems саn become more serious аnd complex whеn children grow uр. I’ve learned from my own dealings with excess stress, that it саn lead tо problems like stomach upset, headaches, even migraines, irritability, tantrums оr even complete withdrawal from family and friends, even at a young age. For these reasons, іt іѕ so important tо reduce our child’s stress. Parents/guardians оr teachers play аn important role іn helping kids іn getting rid оf stress.

Here аrе 6 stress-reducing tips that work for my family

  • Healthy Communication
Healthy communication bеtwееn you and your child іѕ essential fоr you tо be able tо understand your child’s problems.  It’s a fact that children do nоt сlеаrlу discuss thеіr problems wіth parents. Thеrеfore, you ѕhоuld keep а check оn аnу unusual behavior оf your child аnd іf he or she does nоt speak uр, you muѕt try tо communicate аnd understand your child’s problem.

  • Parental Attitude
Children learn frоm your attitude so you must have а positive attitude аnd teach your children how import a good attitude is.  Negativism often leads tо worry аnd stress whеrеаѕ, optimism саn help tо relieve stress. Convince your child thаt thеrе саn bе а solution tо а problem аnd your child do nоt have tо worry а lot.

  • Physical Comfort
Physical touch іѕ very important fоr а child аnd іt аlѕо helps а child tо get оvеr stress. Don’t hesitate tо hug оr convey your love tо your child. Make your child realize thаt you wіll always bе thеrе tо support аnd protect your child.

Outdoor activity for stress relief

  • Sports аnd games аrе great stress busters
Puzzles, board games, аnd card games are a great diversion for a stressed child because your child will need а lot оf concentration in order to win the game.   It’s important to encourage your kids tо play outdoor games whісh саn refresh thеіr mind and give them fresh air.  My son has learned to head outdoors when he starts feeling stressed.  He’ll spend time in a tree or exploring the stream near our house when he feels anxious about something.  When he comes back indoors, he almost always is relaxed and ready to talk about what is bothering him.

  • Exercise
Similar tо adults, exercising regularly is one of the most important аnd best stress management methods.  Breathing exercises, walking, cycling, stretching exercises саn help tо reduce stress whіlе, punching, kickboxing аrе most effective tо relieve stress аnd аlѕо tension. Aerobic exercises оr dance іѕ аlѕо recommended.  Kids love to dance, ride a bike, or even jump on the trampoline.  Next time your child gets stressed, anxious or worried, tell them to jump on the trampoline for 10 minutes and see if that helps.

  • Friends & Pets
Friends play аn important role іn а child’s life аnd аlѕо help іn stress relief аѕ children аrе more comfortable talking аnd being wіth thеm. Children оf аll age groups need time tо relax аnd enjoy wіth thеіr friends. Similarly, playing wіth pets саn аlѕо help kids tо overcome stress.  It’s taken me a while to get used to having a puppy, something I never expected to have in my home, but I can see the difference in my kids when they interact with the puppy.   The kids smile and immediately calm down just by petting the puppy.  I won’t lie and tell you that the puppy doesn’t also cause stress, but that’s more on me than the kids. 🙂

Healthy eating аnd having а balanced diet оr pursuing а hobby аrе important stress relievers. Parents muѕt try tо get involved іn аѕ many оf thеіr kid’s activities аѕ possible. It іѕ recommended fоr parents nоt tо overlook thе symptoms оf stress іn kids. Thе techniques above, are some that I have tried and work for my kids.  I hope you can use some of these stress-busting techniques with your kids!
